Dear Charter Schools and Support Community,

In October of 2015 the NC Public Charter Schools Association expanded its Board of Directors from three to thirteen members. The added members were not new to our organization's governance. Most had already served as our trusted advisors the past four years. The modification was purposeful.

Our charter movement in North Carolina has expectedly grown in this post-cap era as the public has made crystal clear its demands for educational choices. More choices require stepped up decision-making in how our continued growth, both in existing schools and start-ups, is nourished and supported. It is time our Association takes another step forward also!

That step includes the invigoration and broadening of ideas and voices in our movement. To accelerate that destination I am leaving my position in the Association, effective today, after several succession planning sessions with our new Board.

Lee Teague will become the Executive Director. Lee is extremely capable and has served as our Director of Public Relations & Grassroots Development for the past year. More importantly, he shares our passion for public charter school education.

In my six plus years of championing charters full time, plus vocal years in the NC Senate before that, I have been privileged to work with the heads of schools, the volunteer board of directors members, and the dedicated educators who make the charters a family of over 80,000 students. Actually, blessed is a better characterization of my feelings.

This summer marks the 20th anniversary of our charter law. I encourage all of you to plan now to be in Asheville July 31-August 2 for our conference, themed Climbing the Mountain, commemorating your hard work over those 20 years!

I will be there in the mountains with you. Thank you all for the remarkable memories!

“Keep climbing,”
