American Gods actor Pablo Schreiber is one of the first to officially put his name into the running for the vacant role of Wolverine in the X-Men franchise. Hugh Jackman has repeatedly said that his performance in Logan will be the final time that he wears Wolverine's adamantium claws. After 17 years, Jackman leaves behind quite the unenviable legacy for the next actor to fill.

There are certainly a few that feel they'd be up to the task of taking on the iconic role, however, including the American Gods star. In an interview about the end of the show's first season, Schreiber notes that he wouldn't mind playing a superhero, mentioning two specific characters he would love to play.

Schreiber told Comicbook.com he was a big fan of the Wolverine character growing up in the 1980s. Interestingly enough, Pablo's brother Liev Schreiber played Wolverine's brother Sabretooth in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. While the film was not a hit with critics, Liev received praise for his portrayal of Victor Creed. When asked about a potential Schreiber double team of Wolverine and Sabretooth, however, Pablo was sure to lower expectations:

“I was a huge fan growing up of Wolverine and of Daredevil. Those are my two favorite guys and I would jump at the chance to play either one of them in a second. And you know I think Hugh is done now with Wolverine, so maybe it's time for a reboot Maybe it’s time for a new Wolverine.

Maybe we can reboot Sabretooth. I don’t think he would agree to play Sabretooth to my Wolverine.”

On American Gods, Schreiber plays Mad Sweeney, a leprechaun who spends the show coming to terms with his lost charm. He's also known for his work in critically acclaimed shows like Orange is the New Black, Weeds, and The Wire. His character design on Gods slightly resembles a gingered version of the more traditional and rugged Wolverine mutton-chop look. Wolverine seems to be retired for the foreseeable future, however, as 20th Century Fox most likely wants to give the character some time to breathe before the role is recast.

For now, you can catch Schreiber on American Gods, which just wrapped its first season and has been renewed for a second, and Orange is the New Black, whose fifth season premiered on Netflix earlier this month.
