Albrecht Dürer’s Other Lion (1521)

I’ve always preferred this mature Dürer lion.  The problem was, in the course of creating the image, the lion asserted himself and his tail ran off the top corner of the page.  When confined to physical paper, the only thing to do then was to start over, but I’ve never found any indication that the very busy artist and engraver ever got around to it.

When I decided to take a whack at digital restoration, I thought I’d  see about reframing the page and digitally reconstructing the tail as Al might have done. As you can see, it worked beautifully, so I thought I’d digitally frame it, too.

I started with the original unrestored version of the public domain artwork found on Juan Bosco’s San Martin Arts & Crafts site.  You can also find the talented artist (who paints lions, too) on Tumblr.

When I create digital restoration of public domain works I always release them back into the Public Domain with a CC0 dedication.
