A 48-year-old Chinese policeman was suspended from duty after a film went viral showing him threatening to force two sisters to strip naked in front of him during questioning.

The local police chief in Shenzhen has issued a public apology to the women, aged 24 and 27, following a public outcry after the video – secretly filmed by one of the sisters on her mobile phone – was posted online on Friday, the Southern Metropolis News reported.

“You don’t have any ID on you and still you resist being investigated?” the police officer said to the sisters as he drove them to the police station for questioning after he had stopped them while walking in the city’s Baoan district and found they did not have their identity cards.

I suspect that you are men ... why don’t you strip yourself naked and let me have a look. I’m locking you up with thieves, people with Aids and robbers, so enjoy yourself

“I suspect that you are men ... why don’t you strip yourself naked and let me have a look.

“I’m locking you up with thieves, people with Aids and robbers, so enjoy yourself.”

One of the sisters – who were questioned for an hour and then released without charge – recorded the policeman’s questioning on her phone without him noticing during the incident on May 21.

Zhou Zhaoxiang, chief of Baoan district public security, issued a public apology to both women, after the video sparked an outcry.

“I saw the footage and only anger could describe my reaction,” he was quoted saying by the Southern Metropolis News.

“If the victims were members of my family, would I have been able to remain calm ...?

“This was an uncivilised and humiliating personal attack.

“There was nothing wrong with carrying out routine questioning, but what happened at the police station is unforgivable.”

He said the police officer shown in the video had been suspended and had been ordered to carry out additional training while the matter was being investigated.
