Swimming Earns Pair of Wins over McMurry

UTPB men's and women's swimming won a combined 17 of 22 events Saturday afternoon in a pair of victories over McMurry at the UTPB Pool, as the men claimed a 143-58 win and the women's team won 112-62.

Alex Ruata and Nathan Pantalion each earned a pair of individual wins. Ruata took first in the 200 Freestyle in 1:48.53 and finished first overall in 53.76 in the 100 Butterfly. Pantalion earned first-place finishes in the 200 IM (2:04.08) and 100 Breaststroke (1:03.60).

The men also got wins from four other individuals on the day. Johan Jonsson took first in the 1,000 Freestyle with a time of 10:35.56. Jack Maloy won the 100 Freestyle in 50.87. Kyle Smith was fastest in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 56.48, and David de Benito Cabezas won the 500 Freestyle in 5:06.43. The men's team of Blake Bloomquist, Brandon Hay, Maloy and Smith won the 200 Freestyle Relay in 1:31.65.

The UTPB women had a pair of wins from Amanda Alspaugh. Alspaugh took first in the 200 Freestyle with a mark of 2:02.52 and she won the 500 Freestyle in 5:28.37. Jillian Covey won a pair of individual events, taking first in the 200 IM in 2:23.87 and won the 100 Backstroke in 1:14.94. Solo winners included Lauren Porras with a time of 26.36 in the 50 Freestyle, Sammi Strohmeyer in the 100 Butterfly in 1:02.75, and Peyton Slater with a time of 56.04 in the 100 Freestyle.

"Overall I think we had a great meet," said UTPB assistant coach Grant Griffith. " We had a shaky start buy we rebounded very well and overcame early mistakes. I believe this meet gave our swimmers confidence heading into next week where we again look to put up some good times and successful swims."

Both teams are back in action next weekend, traveling to San Antonio for a dual Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
