Colonels Eliminated by Top Seed Islanders, 4-1

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Nicholls State University men's tennis team put up a valiant effort in their first-round match against No. 60 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, but the Colonels would see their season come to an end as the Islanders advanced to the Southland Conference Tournament championship with a 4-1 victory on Saturday at the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center.

Nicholls ends the season at 9-10 after making its fourth consecutive postseason appearance. The Colonels have come up short in the last two, with their last postseason win coming in 2012 when they reached the title match.

The Colonels found themselves in a 1-0 hole after doubles play, dropping the No. 1 and 2 matches. Lukas Clemens and Sam Meessen were defeated, 8-5, at No. 1, while Kieran Cronin and Bernard Wezeman were handed an 8-3 loss at No. 2. Partha Adavelly and Evan Karatzas ended the No. 3 match in a 7-7 tie.

The Islanders then extended their lead to 2-0 after Peter Nagy defeated Lukas Clemens on the No. 1 court, winning both sets, 6-2. Kevin Bettendroffer put A&M-Corpus Christi one point away from clinching with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Adavelly at No. 2, but Meessen kept Nicholls alive with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Javier Pujol at 6-4, 6-4.

Trailing 3-1, Nicholls was able to make things interesting as Wezeman and Max Sinn pushed their matches at No. 3 and 6, respectively, to three sets. But the Colonels were unable to pick up another point as Guillaume Rauseo ended the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Karatzas.
