Habitat for Humanity and a
Unique Drainage Retrofit
Habitat for Humanity's mission is ambitious and its volunteers are humble, building community and affordable homes for families. With thousands of annual projects, Habitat is a "Top 10" homebuilder, working in both new construction and renovation.
A recent project in North Carolina renovated and restored a beautiful turn of the century home. The energy audit revealed that the exterior building envelope was simply clapboard siding nailed directly to the studs, with no sheathing. This classic construction technique allowed the building to breathe and drain. However, this drafty system would quickly diminish this home's affordability.
Danny Gough of Energy Solutions understood that simply adding insulation without managing moisture wasn't a sustainable solution and contacted MTI's moisture management experts. MTI designed a special retrofit drainage system with Sure Cavity to be installed on the interior of the stud cavity, which could then be filled with insulation and closed with sheet rock. This preserved the exterior cladding and improved the energy efficiency of the building envelope while protecting the building from moisture intrusion.
MTI CEO and founder, John Koester, was happy to supply drainage products and expertise to this Habitat project free of charge. Hats off to the volunteers that make projects like this possible, and best wishes to the family who will call this house "home."
