Troubles veterans protest legal ‘witch-hunt’

Veterans and their supporters gathered in Belfast, London and Glasgow yesterday to protest against what they claim is a “witch-hunt” of soldiers who served during the Troubles.

About 500 people rallied outside Belfast City Hall to hear speakers call for an end to legal action brought against ex-security forces members for alleged historical offences.

In London, hundreds of ex-servicemen dressed in ceremonial ties and berets from several regiments gathered on steps near Horse Guards Parade, four days after the 19th anniversary of the historic Good Friday agreements. In Glasgow around 200 protested.

Rallies in Glasgow and London passed without incident but tensions ran high in Belfast due to counterprotests by hardline republicans. There was a sizeable security presence outside City Hall as the opposing sides
