DES MOINES, Iowa — 14 local breweries are putting their heads together to give the people of Des Moines something special this June.

Des Moines Beer Week, hosted June 17-26, will be the third year the craft breweries of the Metro come together to celebrate local beer. And it’s the second year in a row they’ve come together for a special collaboration.

Last year’s collaboration beer was hosted by Confluence Brewing Company. This year, Exile Brewing Co. is steering the ship, with the help of 13 other breweries, including Confluence, 515, Flix, Firetrucker, Fox, and Twisted Vine. The breweries met Wednesday morning to begin concocting an Australian Pale Ale that will be dubbed, ‘High Tide.’

“The recipe-formulation process, you look for input, you put some things out there. ‘Hey, this is the hops we’re looking to use, what do you guys think about it?’ You get some feedback here and there,” said R.J. Tursi with Exile Brewing Co. “Same with the grain bill; you talk about what grains you want in it, ‘Hey this is what we’re going for, what do you guys think about it?’ Get a little feedback, respond to the feedback.”

The end result will hit store shelves in the form of six-packs this June. It will also be featured on tap at each of the Des Moines breweries. For Tursi, the collaboration — which includes five more breweries this year than it did in 2015 — is a symbol of a burgeoning craft beer scene in Des Moines.

“I think it’s fantastic; you know, all it does is help build beer culture in Des Moines,” he said. “Right now, I think that Des Moines has a solid beer culture, there’s a lot of breweries in Des Moines making good, great beers. But it can always be better.”
