Aspiring horror authors may be able to scare up a publishing deal — if the stars align in their favor.
An upcoming contest from the Oakland, Calif.-based publisher Inkshares is inviting horror authors to submit their work, which will then be judged based on reader interest (the number of pre-orders a book receives) to determine which three books the company will publish.
In addition to pre-orders, guest judges will actually be able to nominate books for publication as well, with panelists including Purge writer and director James Demonaco and reviewers from horror outlets and reps from Barnes and Noble.
“We built Inkshares to surface the next generation of great storytellers. This contest is about the next generation of great horror storytellers,” Inkshares CEO Adam Gomolin said in a statement, which goes on to praise the contest’s partners. “All of us at Inkshares feel tremendously lucky to have such amazing allies in The Blood List, Dread Central, HorrorTalk and the Horror Writers Association.”
Kailey Marsh of The Blood List said in a statement she was excited to “shine a light on the yet-to-be-discovered authors in the horror genre.”
Inkshares has had some success in the horror realm, publishing Abomination, the 2015 debut novel of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story screenwriter Gary Whitta. It also released Mr. Holland’s Opus screenwriter Patrick Sheane Duncan’s Dracula v. Hitler in 2016.
The contest runs Aug. 14-Oct. 31. More information can be found here.
