Canada: Stop Animal Cruelty and Pass Bill C-246

Canada is behind the times on legislation against animal cruelty and it has offered limited commitment to changing that. Bill C-246 would legislate cruelty to animals and work to prevent such horrors as puppy mills, physical and sexual abuses against animals, shark finning and the selling of dog and cat furs. These practices are definitely against the culture of the country and yet the bill is having trouble passing.

Canada has refused to act based on fear stemming from inaccurate information from the farming, fishing, hunting and research industries despite the fact that this bill does not affect any of these industries. The government is acting on pressure from misinformed lobbies.

Refusing to legislate against cruelty to animals has no place in Canadian culture. Pets should not be subjected to cruelty and if they are, there should be some ramifications for the abuser.

Sign today to protect animals in Canada. By signing today you are sending a strong message that Canada needs to get with the times and protect animals from cruel practices such as physical and sexual abuse.

To the Honourable Minister Wilson-Raybould,

As a person concerned with the welfare of animals I urge you to support Bill C-246, the Modernizing Animal Protections Act. This act is an important step in preventing such cruelties as physical and sexual abuse of animals, puppy mills, shark finning and the use of cats and dogs for furs.

The House of Commons has been very non-commital in their support of the bill and have been bowing to the pressure of the farming, hunting, fishing and research industries. However, this bill does not affect any of these industries.

Animals should not be treated with cruelty in this country and if they are, there should be legal repercussions as covered under Bill C-246.
