Politics and Patriots with
Tom Lindsay and Michael Eck
Saturday, June 4; 2:30pm

This presentation will feature songs and stories from our America's founding to World War II; campaign songs & ballads, comedy & tragedy.  From George Washington to F.D.R., American statesmen have had their strengths, weaknesses, triumphs and tragedies chronicled in song.  Take a brief respite from today's contentious campaign season with a musical visit to the contentious campaigns of yesteryear!
The Future of Kurdistan
Monday, June 6; 7:00pm

Kurdistan, a mountainous region made up of parts of Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria, is home to the Kurds, one of the largest ethnic groups in West Asia.  Most in the West know them for the oil-rich autonomous region in northern Iraq called Kurdistan--one of the U.S.' closest allies in the Middle East and a bulwark against the expansion of ISIS.  What does the success of Iraqi Kurdistan mean for Kurds in the region?

Facilitated by Martin Charwat, past President of the World Affairs Council of the Mid-Hudson Valley and a former U.S. Foreign Service Officer.

The World Affairs Council of the Mid-Hudson Valley is a member-supported organization that sponsors educational programs and activities to bring nonpartisan information about critical issues facing our nation and the world to our community.
Documentary Screening: Complicit
Wednesday, June 15; 11:00am

The Library District partners with Vassar Temple and the Long Island Temple Educators to present a screening of the film Complicit followed by discussion and light lunch.

Complicit documents the story of the SS St. Louis, the ship that journeyed from Germany to North America in 1939 with 937 Jewish refugees on board, seeking to escape Nazi persecution.  Upon arrival, the ship and her passengers were denied entry. After weeks of negotiations with the US, Canadian and Cuban governments, the SS St. Louis was forced to return to Europe. The plight of and fate of the SS St. Louis is a pivotal event in American Jewish history, one that resonates in the current global refugee crisis, and as such, provides important lessons for present discussion. Film director Robert Krakow will host the discussion of the film, and a survivor of the SS St. Louis will be present to share her recollections.

The film screening and discussion starts at 11:00 and concludes with a light lunch at 1:00.  A contribution from participants will be welcome, though not required.

To make a reservation (requested), please email Jen Dahnert
with Complicit in the subject line.  Vassar Temple is located at 140 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY.

Wednesday, September 7

Michael Hingson and the Triumph of Trust at Ground Zero:  On September 11, 2001, Michael Hingson, a blind man,  escaped the World Trade Center by walking down 78 flights of stairs with his guide dog. Days later, America fell in love with Mike and Roselle and the special bond that helped them both survive one of the country's darkest days.  In 2011, he authored Thunder Dog: the True Story of a Blind Man, His Guide Dog, and the Triumph of Trust at Ground Zero, a New York Times bestseller.  Join us for an evening of remembrance and inspiration.

This commemoration of the 15th anniversary of the September 11 attacks will take place at the Boardman Road Branch Library beginning at 7:00pm.
