THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As part of helping children adapt to changing technology, the Kendriya Vidyalaya at Pattom, has introduced an ‘e-reading hub’ on the school campus.
The director of public instruction (DPI) K Gopalakrishna Bhatt IAS inaugurated the e-reading hub at a meeting held on Thursday with six Kindle e-readers. The initiative was part of the school’s golden jubilee celebrations. “The initiative aims to inculcate reading habits among students instead of allowing them to remain engaged in the virtual world of social media, students could spend more time in the virtual world of books,” said school principal S Ajayakumar.

Kendriya Vidyalaya, Pattom, is the first KV in the country to introduce an ‘e-reading hub’ in its library.
Librarian S L Faisal gave a demonstration on using the e-reader during the school assembly on Saturday morning. “The e-reader is a convenient alternative for books,” said Rakshanya Sekar, a student of Class XI, while batchmate Sohab Vahab felt that it would be hard to replace physical books with the gadgets, though it would be useful at times.
The project worth Rs one lakh had been proposed in the library policy of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) and was partially sponsored by alumni of the 1978 batch of the school.
The institution plans to buy more e-readers before the next academic year. Apart from classic work of fiction, the e-reader also contains e-textbooks and e-content (study material prepared by KVS) and can store up to 3,000 digital books.
