Tickets on Sale for "Another Evening with Marcus Anderson" 

The Wake Forest Renaissance Centre will commemorate its first year of bringing extraordinary and diverse cultural and performing arts experiences to the Wake Forest Community on Saturday, Nov. 1, during "Another Evening with Marcus Anderson." A fan favorite at Wake Forest's Six Sundays in Spring concert series and last November's Celebration of the Arts, Anderson's explosive on-stage energy shows in all his live performances. In addition to Anderson's dynamic performance, the event will include a buffet dinner and cash bar. Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 on the day of the event and include the buffet dinner. Tickets may be purchased online with a Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express credit card. Community & Business Expo is Today 

Presented by CenturyLink, the Wake Forest Area Chamber of Commerce's 2014 Community & Business Expo will include fun activities for the whole family. The event will be held today from 3-7 pm at the Wake Forest Charter Academy, 1851 Friendship Chapel Road (behind Gateway Commons Shopping Center off of Heritage Lake Road). In the family entertainment room, face painting will be provided by RightTime KiDS - Wake Forest. An interactive photo booth will be hosted by Forget-Me-Not Photo Booth. Crafts will be provided by the Wake Forest Woman's Club. Outside the school, Gaming Unplugged will have their 32-foot mobile gaming trailer, which has five high-definition televisions inside and two outside (weather permitting), the latest in video game consoles and games, and stadium seating for up to 28 people who can play simultaneously. At 6:00 p.m., a costume contest for kids will be held. Children should assemble in the gym to be judged. The winner will receive a brand-new Xbox. The Expo is free of charge. This annual event features booth displays by local businesses and non-profits. Door prizes will be given every hour. Prizes to include a gas grill provided by Lowe's Home Improvement, and a framed print of Wake Forest provided by Wake Forest Art & Frame Shop. CenturyLink will provide a surprise technology device as a giveaway. There also will be food and drinks to sample from local vendors such as Main Street Grille Pizzeria & Restaurant, Simply Crepes, Buffalo Brothers, Real McCoys Restaurant and Chick-fil-A. Parking is available onsite at the Wake Forest Charter Academy. Overflow parking is available at Gateway Commons Shopping Center.


 

2nd Memorial Flag-Raising Ceremony Nov. 3 
The public is invited to attend the 2nd Wake Forest Memorial Flag-Raising Ceremony on Monday, Nov. 3, at 11 am. The service will be held in Centennial Plaza, in front of the Wake Forest Town Hall, 301 S. Brooks St., to honor Benny Jackson. Jackson, a 1967 Wake Forest High School graduate, served his nation in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Several members of Jackson's family are expected to participate in the ceremony which will include patriotic songs, special remarks, a memorial wreath laying and the ceremonial flag-raising by members of the Wake Forest High School JROTC. After raising the American flag, the JROTC will raise the U.S. Army service flag in recognition of the military branch in which Jackson served. Both flags will fly in Centennial Plaza throughout November. The Nov. 3 ceremony will begin with the retirement of Walter E. Cole's colors, which will be presented to the Cole family by Wake Forest Mayor Vivian Jones. Cole was honored during the first flag-raising ceremony on Oct. 6. YMCA's We Build People Campaign is Underway

The Kerr Family YMCA and the YMCA at The Factory kicked off the annual We Build People campaign on Thursday, Oct. 2. Nearly 200 volunteers launched the YMCA's Annual Campaign to raise funds for children, teens, families and adults who cannot afford vital YMCA programs. The Annual Campaign provides scholarships and financial assistance for all Y programs, including Y Learning, the YMCA's standardized tutorial program, summer day camps, after school programs, youth sports and adult fitness programs. 100% of every dollar given to the YMCA Annual Campaign is invested in the lives of people who need the Y. To join their cause as a volunteer, stop by either branch - or donate online. 

 


Community Council Seeks Nominations for Volunteer Awards

The Wake Forest Community Council is seeking nominations for its annual volunteer awards, including the Peggy Allen Lifetime Achievement Award, the Citizen of the Year Award, and the Club of the Year Award. Nomination forms and instructions are available online. The deadline for submission is Nov. 5. Award recipients will be announced at the Wake Forest Community Christmas Dinner on December 1, 2014. The Community Council is comprised of area civic, service, social, fraternal, religious, and business organizations, as well as interested individuals. Tickets Now on Sale for Wake Forest Christmas Historic Home Tour 

The Wake Forest Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) and the Wake Forest Woman's Club will present their biennial Christmas Historic Home Tour on Saturday, Dec. 6, from 1 to 7 p.m. Offered only in even-numbered years, the Christmas Historic Home Tour is a self-guided tour featuring several Wake Forest homes and other properties decorated for the holidays and open for viewing. This year's event will also offer free bicycle rickshaw and horse drawn carriage rides, wonderful Christmas music and more. Advance tickets are now on sale for $16 (price includes tax) online and at several area locations.

The Wake Forest Community Calendar is a comprehensive listing of upcoming local events submitted by non-profit groups and organizations in our area. The Town of Wake Forest provides the Community Calendar as a free service and invites local non-profits, including churches, civic clubs and other community organizations, to submit their events for inclusion on the calendar - according to our detailed submission guidelines. The Community Calendar is typically updated each week on Thursday or Friday. Event announcements received at least one week prior to the event will be included for publication in The Week Ahead. Holiday Open House

Surviving the Holidays

Thanksgiving and Christmas will be here soon, and if you're divorced or separated, facing these holidays will most likely be very difficult. You will be met with a variety of emotions that may be hard to sort out.  Family traditions will have to change. If you have children, their experience may be much different than in years past. We are pleased to offer a one night group session called "Surviving the Holidays". The video and "Survival Guide" are produced by Church Initiative, the same organization that produces the materials for Divorce Care.  If you or someone you know is divorced or separated, we welcome you to join us. This session will help you prepare for the painful emotions you may experience during the holidays, and help you understand how you and your children can have a good holiday experience.  Whether or not you've attended Divorce Care or, we welcome you to attend this session.  And we certainly welcome anyone in the community, not just church members, so please share the news. Carolina Puppet Theatre - Thanksgiving

The Carolina Puppet Theatre, longtime entertainers at the former Kazoom Children's Theatre in Raleigh, will perform at the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre, 405 S. Brooks St. The Carolina Puppet Theatre has been entertaining families for over 20 years with fast-paced, interactive performances full of mayhem. Ms. Poly and Ms. Ester, the wacky Garbardine Sisters and the star of the show, Bartlet, use story-telling, music and puppetry to make the shows a delightful experience for young children. Using a variety of puppet styles, the characters come to life with engaging personalities and close interaction with the audience. During the storytelling segment of each show, children are selected from the audience to be the stars. These shows are geared to children ages 3-7. Tickets are $5 per person and can be purchased in advance on the Renaissance Centre website or at the Parks and Recreation window in the lobby of the Wake Forest Town Hall, 301 S. Cinema at the Centre is an evening of film and discussion - by movie lovers for movie lovers. Free and open to the public, the series is also a community event that invites participants to watch and discuss films in a manner that encourages critical thinking while considering different worldviews, truths, faiths and meaningful questions about life, relationships and the purpose found in each film. Cinema at the Centre will feature a wide range of films from Oscar winners to classics to documentaries, but all with an emphasis on meaning and significance found within each film. So bring your friends and come on out to the Renaissance Centre for popcorn, great films and interesting discussion.

First Friday Flix - The Blind Side

St. Ives Neighborhood 1st Annual Holiday Bazaar

"Tis' the Season for Holiday Cheer and Shopping." If you are looking for local, handmade gift ideas from some of the neighborhood's and the area's most talented crafters and artists then you will not want to miss the St. Ives Holiday Bazaar. Proceeds from this Bazaar will go to the Tri-Area Ministry Food Pantry.  Donations of canned food will be accepted at the door.  No charge for entry at door. White Street Holiday Market

On Nov. 8, The Cotton Company will host its second annual White Street Holiday Market from 10 am - 6 pm upstairs in the Event Gallery. The White Street Holiday Market is a one-day only craft fair in which 15 additional vendors will be selling their wares. In addition to the fun going on upstairs, we will also be having vendor demonstrations in our store that day as well as door prize drawings, with the prizes being from our special one-day only vendors. Murder Mystery Dinner Theater - Totally 80s, Totally Murder

Tickets are on sale for the Murder Mystery Dinner Theater "Totally 80's, Totally Murder" on Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre. If you love the theater intertwined with a good murder mystery, then you'll love "Totally 80's, Totally Murder!" The Juggernauts of New Wave are in town for a radical concert, but things turn sour quickly. As it turns out, one of these 80's stars is a murderer! Come enjoy the show and dinner while you try to figure out "whodunit." Designed for patrons ages 8 and older, this crime-solving theatrical production will include a 'Killer Dinner' carved up special just for you. Attendees are invited to come dressed in their righteous 80's concert gear, including jean jackets and spandex leggings, big hair, bangles and - last but not least - leg warmers and ripped jeans. This will be all the rage at this rockin' night of mystery! Wake Forest Food Truck Rodeo

The Wake Forest Food Truck Rodeo will be held Sunday, November 9th from 12pm until 5pm at the Renaissance Center located at 405 Brooks St. in historic downtown Wake Forest.  Some of the Triangle's premiere food trucks will be on hand serving dishes to delight every tastebud!  The event will host live music, kids activities, vendors and local craft beer.  Bowling discounts will also be offered by Brooks Street Bowl located in the center. We are a women's Inspiration-Accountability Circle to support women who have 50+ pounds to lose. We meet at the YMCA in the Factory on South Main Street in Wake Forest. Every Tuesday night at 7 pm. The meetings are just $5 on Tuesday nights with several free exercise events throughout the week. Meetings are community driven featuring wellness experts hosting mini wellness workshops, exercise events throughout the week at different venues, accountability pages and more. Grace Assembly Church offers the following ministries on Wednesday evenings at 6:45 pm: Divorce Care, GriefShare, and Single & Parenting. These ministries are designed to help, comfort, and instruct adults who have suffered through separation, divorce, or the death of a loved one. These are ongoing 13-week programs on Wednesday evenings at 6:45 pm held at Grace Assembly Church in the Wake Forest area. Optimist clubs around the world are dedicated to "bringing out the best in kids". Adult volunteers join Optimist Clubs to conduct positive service projects in their communities aimed at providing a helping hand to youth and empower young people to be the best that they can be. Wake Forest Kiwanis Club

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to 'changing the world, one child and one community at a time.' Its mission is "to serve children of the world". Locally, the Wake Forest Kiwanis Club is involved in many projects which include: providing dictionaries to all 3rd graders in the schools, sponsoring Key Clubs and Builder's Clubs in local schools, passing out water at the July 4th children's parade, providing scholarships, assisting at school cookouts, Salvation Army bell ringers, Wake Forest Christmas Parade, toy drives, food drives, Foster Kids Christmas Party, school supply collection, Lobster Bingo and many others. Purr Partners in a non profit feline rescue group. Every Saturday from 11 am to 3 pm and Sunday from noon to 4 pm we hold an adoption at the Wake Forest Pet Smart. We are in desperate need of funds to continue to rescue and rehabilitate cats and kittens that we get from high kill shelters.
