Volleyball Earns Pair of Home Wins Saturday over Dallas Baptist and Eastern New Mexico

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 UTPB volleyball successfully defended its home court Saturday afternoon, earning a five-set win over Dallas Baptist and later coming back for a 3-1 non-conference win over Eastern New Mexico as part of a tripleheader of volleyball hosted by the Falcons.

UTPB had to come back from behind in the first match of the day, a 21-25, 27-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-10 win over DBU. Having dropped the first set, UTPB and the Lady Patriots played a tight first half of the second set as the lead switched five times and neither team held a lead larger than two points before the Falcons went on top 18-14 on a block by Morgann Davis and Annelise Sanchez. Dallas Baptist rallied to score seven of the next 10 points to tie the match at 21-21. The Falcons played for match point twice at 24-23 and 25-24, and eventually closed out the match with the final two points on a kill by Sanchez and a block from Ariana Gallardo and Rachel Dixon.

Trailing 2-1 when they dropped the third set, the Falcons rallied to put together a 14-4 run to break away to a 14-7 lead in the must-win set. Dallas Baptist closed withing four points twice later in the set, but the Falcons held a comfortable lead in taking the 25-19 win.

UTPB had to play from behind in the fifth, falling back 4-1 early on in the abbreviated set. The Falcons got within a point four different times before a six point run with two kills from Hannah Rebb helped them take a 12-8 lead. UTPB closed out the win with kills from Ryley Carman and Davis to take the 15-10 fifth set win to lock up the victory.

Carman paced all players on the afternoon with 19 kills as she hit a team-best .218 for the day. Ariana Gallardo had 53 assists to pace the Falcons on day, and Marina Salazar led four Falcons in double digits in kills with 31 in her first start at libero.

UTPB came out strong later in the day in a 25-19, 25-22, 14-25, 25-21 win against Eastern New Mexico, earning the first five points of the match in the opening set. The Falcons never trailed in the first despite the Zias getting within a point multiple times throughout the first set. UTPB pulled back away late with three straight points featuring an ace on serve by Taylor Harmon followed by a block from Gallardo and Davis to go on top 19-14, and later won the set on a kill from Carman to take the first 25-19.

The Falcons had to play from behind in the second, falling back 8-4 early on before tying the set with a four-point stretch at 8-8. UTPB took its first lead in the second on a block by Dixon and Carman and went on top 13-11, but fell back on three straight by ENMU. The Falcons later broke away from a 20-20 tie with three straight and wrapped up the second set to lead 2-0 on a kill from Carman for the 25-22 win.

After struggling in the third set in a 25-14 loss, UTPB put to gether a big rally in the middle of the fourth by scoring 11 of 14 points to grab a 16-11 lead. Eastern New Mexico tied the fourth up at 18-18, but the Falcons grabbed the lead back for the final time with three straight points and went on to take the match with a 25-21 set win on a kill from Rachel Dixon to wrap up the day's action.

Caitlyn Guajardo led the Falcons with 10 kills in the second match of the day. Gallardo had a team-high 37 assists while Salazar once again paced the Falcons in digs with 16.

UTPB hits the road this coming week, traveling to San Angelo for a Tuesday night contest at Angelo State.
