Is Old CSCC Going to the Dogs.. or Students?

Franklin High School

An interesting line is being drawn in the sand over the old Columbia State Community College Campus (CSCC.) It seems Williamson County Animal Control would like for that to become their new digs as they continue to grow due to the population growth in Williamson County. However, last night at a WCS workshop, Board Vice Chair Beth Burgos made an impassioned plea on behalf of Franklin High School students and faculty that the property would serve Franklin High School better. It was pointed out that Franklin High School sits on an approximate 30 acre campus, according to the board, while most of the newer campuses in the county are around 70 acres.

In further discussion on the subject, the board seemed in agreement that FHS has been left behind in development, and this would be a positive step forward. Dr. Looney was appointed the task of gathering info with the side note that time was of importance since WCAC had made their intention known. Also of note, is that the property was given to the State a couple of decades ago, but the State seems to want $2.9 million for the county to have it back. According to long time Board Member Gary Anderson, the property was donated 20 years ago to the State “in good faith.” Also during the meeting, the Cheek Park acquisition was addressed briefly, but Dr. Looney was instructed to make CSCC the priority at tis point.

We want to know what do you think best serves the public interest. In two weeks, we will send these results to all the aldermen, commissioners and the School Board.

In other notes from last night’s workshop:

  • Dr. Looney commended staff, faculty, and students for their positive actions during the recent bomb threats
  • A new Athletic Facilities Committee was formed to look at the state of facilities across the county.

  1. Why not compromise and move the high school to the old CSCC campus and then give the old high school over to animal control?

  2. Makes sense. Move the overcrowded high school to an even smaller campus and double magnitude of the current issues, thereby accomplishing absolutely nothing throughout this whole process. After all, the dogs need the educational and athletic facilities much more than FHS students.

    • Exactly…..I had to assume she was joking. No intelligent person would think that was any kind of resolution.

      • Well that was a rude. The article is a little vague if someone is hearing about this for the first time.

  3. Pull history real estate transaction and deal with getting facility back subtract gift add property value and deal with state to get the land back will save us plenty of money and it’s the right thing to do for growth! Columbia state moving affects the only program in WCS public high school so we need to strengthen every high school for our high academic achievers! Regardless it’s a no brainer to grab the property at your fingertips and in a older smaller high school’s neighboring yard!
