Women's Tennis Splits with Wisconsin-Whitewater and Carroll (Wis.) on April 18

The Carthage women's tennis team (20-2, 7-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked No. 13 in the April 9 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Central Region poll, split a pair of matches on Saturday, April 18, losing to Wisconsin-Whitewater (20-4), 7-2, at the Wangerin Tennis Courts in Whitewater, Wis., before winning over Carroll University (Wis., 12-11), 7-2, at the Smeds Tennis Center in Kenosha, Wis.
 
Haleigh McPeek (Sr., Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest, 21-5) split her matches at No. 1 singles, defeating Whitewater's Bridgid McGuire 6-4, 7-6(4), and then falling to Carroll's Abigail Pellett 6-1, 6-4.  Max Mella (Fr., Warren, Ill./Warren Township, 17-9) also split her matches at No. 2 singles, losing to the Warhawks' Alex Talyansky 6-2, 6-2, and then defeating the Pioneers' Julia Patzin 6-2, 6-1.  Abbi Howell (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest, 23-8) split her matches at No. 3 singles, falling to Whitewater and then defeating Carroll. Taylor Bolyard (Fr., Kenosha, Wis./Tremper, 17-5) fell at No. 4 singles to Whitewater, as did Kristen Kalinka (So., Kenosha, Wis./St. Joseph, 9-3) at No. 5 singles. Kirsten Peterson (Jr., Hastings, Minn./Hastings, 21-4) won both of her matches at No. 6 singles defeating Warhawks' Emily Sodemann 7-5, 6-3, and at No. 4 singles defeating the Pioneers' Tiffany Maggioncalda 6-2, 6-3. Emily Kratz (So., Waukesha, Wis./South, 1-1) fell at No. 5 singles to Carroll, however Lauren Woznicki (Fr., Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius Prep, 1-0) was a winner at No. 6 singles in her match against the Pioneers.
 
The No. 1 doubles tandem of McPeek and Mella (26-6) fell to Whitewater's pair of McGuire and Talyansky 8-6, and then defeated Carroll's duo of Pellett and Patzin 8-2. The No. 2 doubles pair of Bolyard and Kalinka (22-4) lost to the Warhawks and then defeated the Pioneers, as did the No. 3 double team of Howell and Peterson (8-3).
 
The Lady Reds play next in the CCIW Women's Tennis Automatic Qualifier Tournament on Fri.-Sat., April 24-25, at the Wheaton College (Ill.) Tennis Courts in Wheaton Ill. Carthage will play Augustana College (Ill., 21-8, 5-2 CCIW) in a Friday, April 24 semifinal match at Noon, for the chance to move on and play the winner of Wheaton (Ill., 14-6, 6-1 CCIW) and North Central College for the title on Saturday, April 25.
