KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association was operating at full capacity prior to the flooding that has devastated the state.

At this point, the shelter is overflowing with pets. Some have been brought in as strays, while others are being temporarily surrendered by owners who have been displaced.

KCHA has also taken in pets that have been evacuated from a private boarding facility that is flooded.

Strays being rescued will be scanned for microchips to help reunite them with their owners once the crisis is over. KCHA has had crews in the hardest hit areas of the region supplying pet food, medical care, and other supplies for families in need.

The shelter is opening a building on the property for emergency boarding as the crisis grows and more animals make their way to the facility.

KCHA is encouraging everyone to adopt cats or dogs from the shelter immediately.

All adoption fees have been waived for cats, including spay/neuter and vaccination fees for cats awaiting homes. Dogs are 50% off through next Sunday.

You may also help foster animals if you wish to help. Call 304-342-1576 for more information.

The shelter is also in need of supplies such as non-clumping kitty litter, paper towels, bleach, puppy pads, Purina Dog Chow, Puppy Chow, Cat Chow and Kitten Chow, and dog and cat crates.

Supplies may be dropped off at the shelter at 1248 Greenbrier Street in Charleston.
