Wilbert Johnson Elected President of CIAA Coaches Association Officers

Wilbert D. Johnson, head coach of Virginia Union University's track & field and cross-country teams, has been elected President of the CIAA Coaches Association Officers, it was announced on Friday, May 6.

Johnson is in his seventh season as the Head Coach of the Virginia Union University men's and women's cross-country and track & field teams.

Lennox Graham of Johnson C. Smith University was elected Vice-President while Lamont Jackson of Virginia State University was elected Secretary.

Johnson was named the 2016 Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year this past season.

During the 2015 Cross Country season the men's team won their 2nd CIAA Cross Country team Championship in a row. They won by dominating the rest of the competition with 5 runners finishing in the top 10 and scoring  a total of 24 points, which is one of the lowest scores in the history of the CIAA Men's Cross Country Championship. All 5 runners made the ALL CIAA Cross Country team and Coach Wilbert D. Johnson was named the 2015 Cross Country Coach of the Year for the 2nd year in a row.

During the 2014 Cross-Country season, the men's team won the CIAA Cross-Country Championship, which was the first in the history of VUU.  They won in dominating fashion as the men's team had five runners finish in the top eight.  All of the VUU Cross-Country runners made the All-CIAA Team, and Coach Wilbert D. Johnson was named the CIAA Cross-Country Coach of the Year.

During the 2015 Indoor Season, junior C'Evon Jones won the NCAA Division II Indoor National Championship in the 60 meters with a blazing time of 7.35 seconds, which made her the first female National Champion in the history of VUU.  The men's team finished third during the CIAA Indoor Championship.

The men's team finished as runners-up during the CIAA Outdoor Championship for the second consecutive year.

The men's 4 x 100 relay team advanced to the NCAA National Outdoor Track & Field Championship, which was held in Allandale, Mich., on May 19-24, 2015.  They made the second team All-American Team along with Atrneil Reid.  Freshman sensation Chazton McKenzie broke the school record in the long jump with a leap of 24' 6.25."  Sophomore Artneil Reid broke the school record in the triple jump with a leap of 49' 4.25."

During the 2014 outdoor campaign, the men's 4 x 100 meter relay team of Berfrantz Charles, Malcolm Morris, Allen Dooms and Antoine Whitaker finished third overall during the NCAA Division II National Outdoor Track & Field Championship with a blazing time of 40.05 on May 22-23, 2014, at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich., while establishing themselves as All-Americans.

During the indoor season, super sophomore sensation C'Evon Jones finished fourth overall in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.43 at the NCAA Division II National Track & Field Championship in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Prior to joining the Panther program, Johnson was the Assistant Track & Field Coach at Florida A & M in Tallahassee, Fla.

During Johnson's tenure at FAMU, he coached and/or assisted the men's team to several MEAC Indoor and Outdoor Championships.  He also coached countless regional and national qualifiers.

Prior to his time at FAMU, Johnson was the Head Boys/Girls Cross-Country and Track & Field Coach for 10 years at his high school alma mater Blanch Ely High School in Pompano Beach, Fla.  While at Blanch Ely, Johnson built a powerhouse program which included notable athletes who played in the National Football League.

Johnson also coached many high school state champions and All-Americans.

Johnson is no stranger to competition himself.  He was a four-time All-American and national champion in the men's 400 intermediate hurdles while attending Florida Memorial University in Miami, Fla.  He was also a high school state champion and All-American during his running career at Blanch Ely High School.

Johnson is a 1991 graduate of Florida Memorial University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice and a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

Johnson was born in Sanford, North Carolina and raised in Pompano Beach, Fla.
