Ben Wallace, who played for Virginia Union University and then went on to a 16-year career in the NBA, which included being named defensive player of the year four times, Wallace won an NBA championship with the Detroit Pistons in 2004., was inducted into the State of Virginia Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, April 25, in Portsmouth, Va.

Wallace, who still holds the VUU record with 114 blocked shots in 1995-96, was inducted along with Angela Hucles, Johnny Grubb, Paul Hatcher, Fletcher Arrit and Mike Stevens.

"I didn't imagine this day," Wallace said. "I worked hard to try and be the best player I can be, best person I could be, and in order to get an accomplishment like this takes other people to recognize the work that you put in, or the type of person you are, and I just appreciate those people that recognize me and voted me in."

Wallace said he stopped watching basketball three years ago, but he's still close to the game, he runs a gym in Richmond for at-risk youth.

Also inducted along with Wallace was Angela Hucles, who's grandfather was the legendary Henry Hucles, who played and coached football at VUU.

"This whole journey has been incredible," said Hucles. "Having progressed to the highest level with the U.S. Women's National Team to represent my country is one of my favorite in terms of greatest accomplishments that I hold."

Hucles won two Olympic gold medals as part of the United States Women's National Soccer Team.  Henry Hucles was Athletic Director at Virginia Union for 30 years and retired in 1969, capping a 50-year involvement with the University.
