National Coffee Day (9/29/16): How to get free coffee; Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts, Wawa

Coffee lovers can get a cheap or free java fix on National Coffee Day, an unofficial holiday that Wawa, Dunkin' Donuts, Krispy Kreme and other coffee chains are marking by giving away complimentary or discounted cups of joe.

National Coffee Day -- not to be confused with International Coffee Day -- falls on Thursday, September 29th, this year.

Stop at any of Wawa's more than 700 locations on Thursday and walk away with a free coffee of any size. The convenience store chain says it expects to hand out more than two million free cups of coffee from all of its stores in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Florida throughout the day.

(Though Wawa says its giveaway is to mark International Coffee Day, the International Coffee Organization is celebrating that holiday on Oct. 1. Either way, free coffee!)

Krispy Kreme is not just giving away free coffee on National Coffee Day. Customers who visit one of the chain's participating locations on Thursday will receive a free 12-ounce cup of coffee and a free glazed doughnut. Krispy Kreme currently only has one location in southern New Jersey but the doughnut chain has plans to open six stores in Hudson and Bergen counties in the coming years.

For now, find Krispy Kreme in Collingswood or check out locations in Pennsylvania and New York City.

For those on the road this Thursday, Pilot Flying J is giving away a free small cup of coffee or small tea or cappuccino with this coupon. The Knoxville, Tenn.-based truck stop chain has multiple locations in New Jersey.

Dunkin' Donuts is cutting the price of a medium-sized cup of coffee to 66 cents for National Coffee Day. The special price is a nod to the donut and coffee chain's "66-year history of keeping people running with great coffee each and every day."

For customers who would rather skip a deal on coffee to help support a cause, check out a local McDonald's or Starbucks on National Coffee Day.

McDonald's restaurants in southeastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey will donate all proceeds from regular and decaffeinated drip coffee on Thursday to Covenant House, a group that helps homeless young people.

Starbucks is also going the charitable route on National Coffee Day.

The Seattle-based coffee chain says it will donate one coffee tree for every cup of Mexico Chiapas coffee it sells on Thursday. The trees will be donated to farmers fighting coffee rust, a tree-destroying fungus that has hit Central America particularly hard.
