Plant Powerful Color That Will Outlast the Season

If you adore bright, flowering plants on your porch, in your gardens and even bordering your lawn, you’ve still got time to plant powerful color this Memorial Day weekend, that will last into the fall.

Consider some of these colorful favorites that all come in varieties for wherever you want to plant, and they are all easy to care for, too!

Geraniums
Find geraniums with blooms of red pink, white, or even purple or orange. And with leaves of green, silver, gold, yellow or red, fancy leaf geraniums make great additions to your containers.

You can pack geraniums closely together, but make sure they have proper drainage. It’s best to soak them and let them drain so the roots remain moist (not waterlogged) at all times.

Hydrangea
A shade-loving shrub, the hydrangea produces bold clusters of flowers in blue, lavender, pink, rose or white. Except for white hydrangea plants, the change in flower color will vary depending on the pH and aluminum levels of your soil.

You can find hydrangea plants that will beautify your containers, too. Most varieties prefer partial to full shade though, with fertile and moist soil.

Zinnias
Zinnias pack punches of bountiful color that can make your gardens or containers pop! These annuals provide flowers in red, orange, purple, yellow or white. And it’s easy to extract seeds from the flower’s corona, put them in a plastic bag to dry out and replant them next year.

Plant your zinnias in full sun about 6 to 8 inches apart, give them a good soaking every couple of days and watch them erupt!

We don’t usually associate Memorial Day with fireworks. But it’s the perfect time to plant your flowering favorites from Market Basket, and watch your gardens and containers burst with color through the next couple of seasons!
