The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse program suffered a 19-12 loss to nationally-ranked Union College on Wednesday afternoon at Fisher's Growney Stadium.
With the win, No. 12 Union improves to 7-2, while the Cardinals fall to 5-4.
Union scored the game's first goal just 14 seconds into the contest, but the Cardinals came right back, tying it at 1-1 on a goal from
Gary Bova with 13:13 remaining in the first.
The Dutchmen scored five goals in a 4:30 span to take a 6-1 lead, but Fisher answered again with three straight goals in the final three minutes to end the first quarter down just two at 6-4. Senior
Nick Rossi scored of two of the three goals during the run, including one with just under 20 seconds left in the quarter on a pass from
Tim Wagner.
It stayed a two-goal game early in the second quarter with Bova scoring his second goal of the game with 10 minutes left in the half to make it 7-5. Union, however, scored the final four goals of the period to take an 11-5 lead at the break.
After goals from
Matthew Condon and
Christopher Buschi made it 12-7 midway through the third quarter, the Dutchmen pulled away, scoring six of the game's next seven goals to take an 17-8 lead early in the fourth quarter.
For Fisher, Rossi tallied five points on four goals and one assist. Bova and Condon each scored two goals, while Wagner finished with two assists. Freshman
Shane Cronkwright added one goal and one assist, marking first career points at the collegiate level, while
Nick Costello also notched one goal and one assist.
Junior
Scott Kershner also scored for Fisher, while
Joe Gaug and
Andrew Rosso each registered assists.
Goalie
Zach Knight stopped seven shots, while
Paul Cefalu scooped up six ground balls.
Fisher returns to action at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Stevens Institute of Technology in a pivotal Empire 8 Conference matchup.
