Maine Mall Road was reopened late Monday night and water service was restored to businesses after an early morning water main break, according to South Portland police.

By 9 p.m., Lt. Tom Simonds said crews from the Portland Water District were filling in a trench that was dug to replace a 12-foot section of water main. The southbound lane of Maine Mall Road remained had remained closed late into the evening until crews could patch the road, a process that was delayed by the rain, he said. The road was finally reopened by 11 p.m.

Water service had been restored around 6:30 p.m., officials said.

The 12-inch water main burst at around 6 a.m. Monday on Maine Mall Road, flooding the primary entrance to the Maine Mall on a busy state holiday for shopping.

Maine Mall Road, from Philbrook Avenue and Gorham Road, was closed for about three hours after the break. Police reopened the northbound lane to traffic by 9:45 a.m., but southbound traffic was detoured until late Monday night.

The mall remained open throughout the day and was approachable from side roads.

The cause of the water break is unknown, according to Michelle Clements, spokeswoman for the Portland Water District. Clements said the rainy weather slowed down the repairs.

“There was a lot of water out there before we could shut the valve,” Clements said. “The weather is proving to be a challenge as we try to get things back in order.”

Clements said at least a half-dozen businesses were affected by the break.

One business was Chipotle at 359 Maine Mall Road, which delayed its opening by 90 minutes until water was restored, according to kitchen manager Terrence Murphy.

Murphy didn’t think opening at 12:30 p.m. resulted in too much lost business.

“I think the people we turned away ended up coming back later,” Murphy said.
