Dr. Heather Darby is an Agronomy Specialist with the University of Vermont, her areas of expertise are: Soil quality and nutrient management; Grain production; Organic farming; Forages; Hops; Oilseed crops; Biofuel production

Featuring Dr. Heather Darby (VT) and farmer Archie Blankers (QC), this farmer-oriented session will combine practical field crop innovations with networking opportunities to advance the organic grains sector in our region. Dr. Heather Darby's workshops will cover advances in grain research with the Northern Organic Grain Growers (Northeastern U.S.) and will include topics such as:

Weed Management
Cover Cropping
Soil Fertility
Seed

While long-time farmer and research participant of the Northern Grains Network, Archie Blankers, will discuss the on-farm application and effectiveness of many of topics above, including a workshop on his experience "Capturing Value Added Markets" for buckwheat, corn, soybeans and other small grains.

The afternoon will also include important networking time for a roundtable-style chance to discuss our region's varied organic grain products, the challenges and opportunities in the sector, including the struggling livestock sector, demand for organic grain, pricing and markets, while also exploring the potential benefits of a Maritime Organic Grains Network.

Intended for organic field crop producers from across the Maritime region, this workshop will take place at the Farm Centre in Charlottetown, PEI. ACORN has a limited amount of financial bursaries available for those carpooling/travelling to the workshop from off-Island, please be in touch ASAP with Steph Hughes if you are in need of assistance.
