Rogue One is coming to Netflix in July

Fans will soon have easy access to the first Star Wars anthology film

The upcoming Star Wars anthology film exploring the backstory of Han Solo hit a road bump this week when directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller parted ways with the production (Ron Howard is set to step in and finish the job). But as eager fans wait for the Han Solo story to sort itself out, they can take solace in the fact that the first anthology film, last year’s Rogue One, is set to hit Netflix next month.

Directed by Gareth Edwards, Rogue One tells the story of Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), a troubled loner who is recruited by the Rebel Alliance to steal the Empire’s Death Star plans before it’s too late. Teaming up with Rebels like the enigmatic Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and the sarcastic droid K-2SO (Alan Tudyk), Jyn’s quest for salvation and redemption runs right up to the beginning of the original film, Star Wars: A New Hope.

As EW’s Chris Nashawaty wrote in his B+ review of the film, “Rogue One would have been a very good stand-alone sci-fi movie if it came out under a different name. But what makes it especially exciting is how it perfectly snaps right into the Star Wars timeline and connects events we already know by heart with ones that we never even considered.”

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set to hit Netflix July 18. Check here for a full list of everything coming to Netflix next month.
