Tell SeaWorld to Keep Trainers Out of Orca Tanks!
OSHA ordered SeaWorld to keep trainers out of orca tanks following the 2010 death of Dawn Brancheau, but a loophole allows humans to join orcas in small, isolated medical pools.
This loophole clearly exists so that professionals can assist orcas with medical treatments, but SeaWorld trainers are abusing the exception. Video footage from as late as October 2014 shows a trainer riding on an orca while standing on its back, and swimming in the pool with the killer whale.
Though there are few recorded incidents of orca attacks in the wild, there have been dozens of serious attacks by captive orcas, several of them fatal. Humans should not be swimming with captive orcas given their greater propensity toward lashing out in their frustrating captive environment. Please sign the petition to urge SeaWorld to keep humans out of ALL orca tanks!
We, the undersigned, are concerned that trainers are continuing to enter medical pools at SeaWorld for purposes other than administering medical care.
