West Brownsville Residents On Edge After 8 Dogs Poisoned

WEST BROWNVILLE (KDKA) – The residents of West Brownsville are concerned after someone has gone around and intentionally tried to poison dogs.

It seems to be focused on one neighborhood.

One-year-old Kujo is a pit bull who is full of energy, life and noise. And for Kathleen Hines, he is her lone survivor.

"There was four poisoned," said Hines. "Of those four, one survived. The other three perished."

Hines lives on Jefferson Street in West Brownsville and in the last few weeks, someone has set about intentionally poisoning dogs there and in other parts of the community.

"They took dog biscuits and soaked them in rat poisoning, then give them to the dogs," said Hines. "They gotta be warped out of their minds."

Officials say poison has killed at least eight dogs. One of them, Donna Kincaid's 1-year-old lab mix, Ruby. The dog's demise was heartbreaking to witness.

"She would lay around, she wouldn't move and when we tried to pick her up to move, she would just collapse over," said Kincaid.

Since Ruby's death, Kincaid's other animals can't run in the backyard. It's simply too risky.

"We have to take them for walks around the neighborhood to get them exercise," she said.

Animal welfare agents who are working the case are looking for those responsible. But for those who lost pets, while they want justice, say that will only do so much to quell the pain.

"He broke my heart and my kid's," said Kincaid. "Ruby was my son's dog. Ruby was my little princess, and now I don't have her because of some stupid person who doesn't know what they are doing to families."

The West Brownsville Police chief is asking the owners of the pets that have been poisoned, and anyone else with information on the case to step forward and contact them immediately at 724-785-8434.
