The woman who brought a gun to Princess Charlotte's christening - and the only guest who had to wear a uniform: How Kate's royal protection officer and her nanny made sure the big day went perfectly

  • Maria Teresa Borrallo and Sergeant Emma Probert were on duty
  • Nanny Borrallo came dressed in her beige Norland Nanny uniform
  • Wearing the uniform isn't required unless the employers insist upon it
  • Sergeant Probert has been Kate's close protection officer since 2010
  • She is trained in martial arts and carries a Glock 9mm pistol at all times

All eyes might have been on the Royal Family during Princess Charlotte's christening but for two women, it was very much business as usual.

Walking behind the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as they arrived at St. Mary Magdalene church was Kate's 43-year-old bodyguard, Emma Probert.

Outside the church afterwards, as a playful Prince George pulled faces and peered into his sister's pram, was nanny Maria Teresa Borrallo, 44.

Miss Borrallo has become a familiar sight at royal events and was part of the team that supported the Cambridges on their tour of Australia and New Zealand.

Unusually, yesterday saw her come dressed in the beige uniform of a Norland Nanny - complete with a matching hat and sensible flat brogues.

The outfit, which echoes the one introduced by Norland founder Emma Ward in 1945 but was updated by designer Lauren Cope two years ago, is insisted upon for trainee nannies.

However, the nanny school says that the ensemble doesn't have to be worn by graduates unless their employers want them to - which suggests the get-up was worn at the behest of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

By contrast, Sergeant Probert, a member of Scotland Yard's Protection Squad, arrived dressed in a glamorous black wrap dress topped with a neat navy cocktail hat.

Regardless of what she wears, the 43-year-old is no soft touch and is trained in martial arts.

She also carries a 9mm Glock pistol and a Taser stun gun at all times when with the royals and is no slouch when it comes to evasive manoeuvres.

Sergeant Probert is also thought, like all close protection officers, to wear a stab vest while on duty with the royals.

Formerly bodyguard to Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, the police officer and her then-partner Karen Llewellyn were dubbed 'Cagney and Lacey' by their former charges.

Placed in charge of the Duchess' protection in 2010, Sergeant Probert is said to have 'hit it off' with Kate from the outset and was in the front seat of the Rolls Royce that took her to her 2011 wedding.

The policewoman was also among the first on the scene of the Tavistock Square bus bombing where Hasib Hussein had detonated a device concealed in a rucksack during the 7/7 attacks.

Prime position: In April 2011, she accompanied the Duchess of Cambridge to church on her wedding day

Her role was highlighted when Camden duty inspector David Nasmyth-Miller was awarded an MBE in the 2007 New Year Honours List for his calm handling of officers and resources during the attack.

He said at the time: ‘I am delighted and humbled to receive this honour and would like to thank those who worked alongside me on the day, especially my sergeants, and in particular Probert.’

Like the Duchess' bodyguard, the 44-year-old is trained in evasive driving and can 'skid-pan' a car away from an attacker - or, indeed, a group of intrusive photographers.

She is also trained in the art of 'pram dodging' -  an evasion technique taught to all nannies studying at the £36,000-a-year Norland College and essential for those working for high profile employers.

The discreet Spaniard also speaks several languages and is said to ‘live for the job’.

Although those elements of her training are yet to be called into action, Miss Borrallo has proved adept at managing Prince George.

First employed by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in March 2014, the 44-year-old made her public debut on the steps of a plane at Wellington Airport in New Zealand.

Since then, she has remained largely in the UK, freeing the Duke and Duchess to travel abroad without George if necessary - most recently when the couple visited New York.

However, she was on hand once again when William, Kate and George travelled to Mustique for Carole Middleton's 60th birthday where she played an unobtrusive behind-the-scenes role.

Since Princess Charlotte's birth, Nanny Borrallo has been busier than ever, although much of her effort remains focused on George.

On the verge of hitting the so-called terrible twos, the toddler was on typically cheeky form at the christening and made a bid for escape through the church graveyard after the service.

Miss Borrallo, who was later seen smiling as her young charge approached his great-grandmother, was there to catch him.
