Showtime’s Penny Dreadful is bringing back Patti LuPone — with a twist — and will add Dr. Jekyll to its mix in season three.
The horror drama has promoted the Tony-winning actress to series regular, the premium cable network announced Tuesday.
LuPone (American Horror Story) guest-starred during season two as the Cut-Wife, however, in season three, she’ll return as a regular performer in the role of Dr. Seward, an American therapist who treats Vanessa (Eva Green) with an unconventional new approach.
Additionally, Robert Louis Stevenson‘s Dr. Henry Jekyll will join the roster of literary characters in the drama from John Logan. Shazad Latif (The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) will take on the iconic role as one of the five new guest-stars poised to join the nine-episode season.
Additionally, Wes Studi (Hell on Wheels) is set to join the cast as a series regular, playing Kaetenay, an intense, enigmatic Native American with a deep connection to Ethan (Josh Hartnett), who also becomes an ally to Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton).

Set to debut in 2016, the new season of Penny Dreadful also will add guest-stars Christian Camargo (Dexter) as Dr. Alexander Sweet, a zoologist who strikes up an unlikely friendship with Vanessa; Samuel Barnett (Jupiter Ascending) as Seward’s mysterious young secretary; and Jessica Barden (The Outcast) as Justine, a young acolyte to Lily (Billie Piper) and Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney).
“Season three is a real change of pace for us, which is good,” Logan told The Hollywood Reporter following the season-two finale. “We can get out of the alleys and cobblestone bars of Victorian London and see a bit more of the world. Essentially there’s a pull bringing these characters together, and it’s supernatural, partly romantic, partly shared destiny.”
An exact return date for Penny Dreadful has not yet been determined.
