Gratitude To Support Your Life
November 2015
Happy Thanksgiving!

We wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving!  It's difficult for many during the holidays.  You may have lost loved ones or it might be difficult to communicate with certain family members.  I think one of the best skills to use is gratitude.  Identify 10 different things you're grateful for each day. This skill supports bringing you into the moment and puts life into perspective.

Our theme for December is Effective Communication Skills to Support Your Recovery. I think this is an excellent topic to support those visiting family during the holidays.  We want to support you being able to communicate with anyone any everyone you are spending time with during the holidays.

Please feel free to write, tweet, or like us.  We love to hear from our readers.  Thank you for supporting and believing in our services.  We feel honored to be a resource in the WEHO community.  Don't forget we are in-network with 40 different insurance and EAPs.  Contact us to get started on changing your life.

Sincerely,
Elana & The RHN Team

Gratitude is Key

Gratitude is one of the key tools 12 step programs use to help addicts recover. However, gratitude is very helpful whether one is in recovery or not. There is a newer branch of psychology called positive psychology. Instead of focusing on pathology, this branch studies what makes happy people happier than the rest of us. One thing that they have found is that happy people cultivate gratitude.

Gratitude to Support Recovery

One concept that is a common theme for those in recovery is that of gratitude. An "attitude of gratitude" is thought by many to be the key to happiness and hopefully to sobriety. Unfortunately I have noticed that those who seem to be the biggest vocal proponents of gratitude are the people who really can't tell what it is or how to practice being grateful. Being grateful is an attitude that can be acquired, but it does take practice. There is a big difference between giving lip service to a phrase and holding it as a belief.

Reflecting on Blessings

Our culture, fueled by social media and the need to get ahead, encourages consumerism, self-obsession and immediate gratification, which keeps us stuck in a state of WANT. When you are operating in the WANT state, nothing is EVER enough (or good enough). This way of thinking leads to low self-esteem, anxiety, symptoms of depression, feelings of emptiness, anger and envy. This WANT state takes our minds out of the present and into the past or future. On the other hand, having gratitude, focusing and appreciating what we do HAVE, grounds us in the present which promotes feelings of well-being and joy. I'm as susceptible as anyone to falling into this state of WANT, but when I do, I utilize these quotes by Dickens and Tolle for inspiration and then meditate on my gratitude list.
