Why this petition matters

Started by John James

A lot of people reading this will remember Liz and Dai Evans along with the youth opera saving the Lyric the first time. There were holes in the roof, most of the seats were broken and there was no money for renovations. A determined Liz Evans fought with her fantastic team of helpers to make the Lyric one of the best theatres in the UK. Who could forget her writing to Stephen Spielberg and running the premier of Jurrassic Park. The hundreds of volunteers that came together to help or the thousands of people who have visited the Lyric over the years.... It's helped create huge stars such as brothers Mark & Wynne Evans, Mike Doyle and many more currently on radio, TV, Theatre and film.  It looks like it will be sold off to the highest bidder and our generation will be the last to see this amazing venue.

We have lost our town carnival already, please do not let them take the Lyric from us to. Where does this stop???

A trust could be set up and I believe the Lyric should be handed over to be run as it should with the local passion of the people from Carmarthen..

The Carmarthen Journal released the following story this week -

CARMARTHENSHIRE Council could be looking to outsource its leisure facilities, it has been revealed.

The local authority is expected to discuss offloading its leisure centres and theatres in coming weeks.

It means leisure-related sites currently overseen by the county council could soon be placed in the hands of a private sector firm — along with the council staff employed, although it is understood no assets will be sold off.

A similar situation has already been taken by Neath Port Talbot Council.
Council Leader Emlyn Dole said officers had been asked to compile a report.

"We are nowhere near a decision on this," he said.

"If the only way to maintain leisure services is to have them run by an arms-length company then that's what we will have to do.
