Homeless & Vehicle Replacement

I don't typically ask for help, but my wife and I have been set back by quite a few steps.  So, our story, in the hopes that any amount you could spare could help us achieve our dreams.

What seems like another lifetime ago, my wife and I lived in our own home and paid our own bills.  Unbeknownst to us at the time, there was a black mold problem.  By the time we had found it and started fixing the issue, it had caused me to become extremely ill.  It took all my effort to get out of bed, let alone drive safely anywhere while constantly blacking out.  Eventually, this led to us being unable to pay our bills, and the loss of our home.

Luckily, we had friends that we had visited  who lived 500 miles away that offered us a place to stay while we got back on our feet.  We graciously accepted this offer, packed up everything we could into our little car, sold or gave away all else, and went to start a new life 9 hours from the place we called home for so long.

That was almost 3 years ago.  We are still living in our friends living room, as that is the only space they had for us.  While we have not overstayed our welcome, we wanted to give them their space back, and have our own place to live.  We have decent jobs, but both of our credit ratings took a huge hit, making it impossible to get any help of any kind.

Fast forward to last week (7/8/2016).  We had figured out our finances and how we could best go about renting to own a house.  We have monthly monies in mortgage territory, but the chances of us getting a mortgage with our credit, much less a down payment, is extremely low.  Knowing this, I started calling realtors in the area about properties and created a list to show my wife, and proceeded home to tell her the great news.

Later that night, a micro-burst or some such thing came roaring through the area.  While it only lasted a mere 5 minutes, the damage is caused was extensive.  It took the tree in the driveway down and placed it on our vehicle, essentially killing any hope of us moving within the timeframe we had allotted.  This also destroys our ability to reliably commute to work without begging for rides, and generally be independent.  While our monthly income has been noted to be in mortgage territory, I have also noted that we can't seem to get a leg up on saving for a down payment (further complicated by my wife being out of work for the past 3 months due to an injury.  Her next doctors appointment, added to the stack of doctor bills this has been racking up, is on the 18th, where it's extremely likely she will be able to return to work, further complicating the carpool situation).  This is also true of our current situation of now needing a vehicle.  Insurance won't cover the vehicle.  We stored many of our belongings inside of it as well, due to there simply not being enough space in the house to keep our things (to be expected with 4 adults and 3 children in 1 abode).

$5000 is more than enough in this area to find another SUV that, if needed, could still haul our belongings and shopping.  Anything over that amount received, or over the amount spent on purchasing a new-to-us vehicle, will go towards our dream of owning our own place again.

Any help is extremely appreciated.
