Dash cam captures terrifying close call as drivers avoid head-on collision by centimetres

A motorist who narrowly avoided a head-on collision with a ‘distracted’ 4WD driver on Easter Monday said the close call could have cost him the lives of his family.

The man, known as John, shared a recording of the incident on social media, showing a landcruiser crossing over the double lines to enter his lane.

At the last second, John swerves off the road, turning would could’ve been a horrific smash into a side scrape.

Dash cam footage at the front and rear of the vehicle show the two cars bouncing off each other before slowing down and pulling over on the side of the outback highway.

John said the near-miss was “100mm off from being a head on”.

When questioned about her erratic behaviour, the other driver told John “there was something on her leg that distracted her”.

“She hit my wing mirror and that smashed my drivers window," John said.

"Dad got glass in his eye and I had some minor cuts. My wife, daughter and dog were uninjured.

“Very nearly a catastrophic last scene for all involved."

Among the hundreds of comments, many viewers on Facebook believed the ‘distracted’ driver was using her mobile phone.

“Yeah the "something" on her leg was her mobile phone that she was looking at instead of keeping her eyes on the road!” one man wrote.

“Eyes on the road and not on your bloody mobile phone, wow could have been catastrophic” a woman agreed.

“The Facebook jury have found the driver guilty of mobile phone use, although there is no evidence of it,” a user commented.

This certainly isn't the first terrifying dash cam footage to go viral. Check out these videos you may have missed:
