Mindy Project renewed at Hulu

Hulu is continuing to follow The Path, but that’s just one of the many announcements the on-demand streaming service made on Wednesday morning. Another big one: The company will stay in the Mindy Kaling business, as it renewed The Mindy Project for a fifth season.

Hulu is also continuing its relationship with Triumph the Insult Comic Dog — Robert Smigel will return to voice the comedic pooch for a second election special, set to debut “just in time for the election,” said the company..

Ron Howard is probably the biggest new face to land on Hulu’s roster. The company is launching Hulu Documentary Films with the exclusive streaming video on-demand rights to the Oscar winner’s feature doc, The Beatles: Eight Days a Week. The film will debut this fall, both on Hulu and in theaters, and chronicle the early part of the Beatles’ career, from 1962-1966. “It will explore their inner workings — how they made decisions, created their music and built their collective career together — all the while, exploring The Beatles’ extraordinary and unique musical gifts and their remarkable, complementary personalities. The film will focus on the time period from the early Beatles’ journey in the days of The Cavern Club in Liverpool to their last concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco in 1966,” said Hulu about Howard’s film in a release.

Lastly, Hulu announced it will work with Live Nation to create a virtual reality concert performance series for its VR app, which launched in March. “No medium has the potential to bring the magic of a live concert to life more than virtual reality,” boasted Live Nation chief strategy officer Jordan Zachary. The series will combine both concert footage and a behind the scenes look at the artists backstage. No announcements have been made as to which artists those might be.

Hulu currently has nearly 12 million subscribers.
