Finally: UN describes FGM as child abuse

After 20 long years the UN finally describes FGM as child abuse

After 20 long years of waiting, the UN finally describes FGM as child abuse.

Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, executive director of the United Nations Population Fund, has called the cruel procedure in an interview with BBC "child abuse".

Until that day, FGM was referred to as a violation of human rights or a "harmful tradition".

Osotimehin calls for a closer cooperation between the stakeholders and for the development of sustainable campaigns.

FGM is child abuse and a serious crime against humanity, the public recognition of FGM as child abuse is an important step in the fight against female genital mutilation.
