Legendary funk artist George Clinton is preparing to release a new album, his first since 2008’s George Clinton and His Gangsters of Love. Best known for his work as part of Parliament and Funkadelic, Clinton’s upcoming project will be released on Brainfeeder, the label founded by progressive electronic artist Flying Lotus.

“Yes, the word is out!” the official Brainfeeder Twitter account posted Tuesday afternoon. “George Clinton will release a new album on Brainfeeder. Details coming soon…”

Clinton is a known Brainfeeder associate. Last year, Flying Lotus joined with hip-hop duo Shabazz Palaces and Brainfeeder cohort Thundercat to form WOKE — and their only single to date, “The Lavishments of Light Looking,” features Clinton. At the time Flying Lotus, whose given name is Steven Ellison, told Pitchfork “there’s more stuff with George” in the works. “When he comes out to Los Angeles, he comes to the studio and we lay out some ideas,” Ellison said. “George is amazing. He’s so sharp and he’s got so many ideas still. It’s such a crazy thing witnessing him and his process.”

Flying Lotus, Funkadelic (featuring Clinton), Shabazz Palaces, Thundercat, and the Gaslamp Killer will perform three special Brainfeeder shows in September. The first two, set for Sept. 15 and 16, take place at Oakland’s Fox Theater, while the third, scheduled for Sept. 17, is booked for Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl.
