Gardening Orientation
Saturday, August 6, Noon

Easy Self-Directed Tasks

Weed the Cobbles outside RING
Why, you might ask?  Otherwise, Parks dept. comes in with herbicide Roundup and sprays the cobbles. This isn't good for the environment or your dog, who walks in it.  There's a weed pile started at the Broadway end just outside the fence.  Let's finish it soon, going for the tall weeds first, along Riverside and at the Broadway point!

Saturday activities.  From 10-12 the pond care team will be there and you can learn how we keep the pond's ecosystem going and healthy for our fish.  At Noon, Maggie will be on hand to demonstrate our watering systems, the composting system, and give you your special weed to find and uproot around the garden. The lawn needs mowing too!

Watering. Though the heat wave has broken for now, we could hit a dry or hot spell at any time. Please be on the lookout for wilting leaves and come in to water. We have 3 indestructible nozzles in place now.  You just turn on the water and bend it to operate.
See the photo below.

To the right is a female black swallowtail butterfly enjoying the nectar of our blooming phlox.

As mentioned last week, a very large building (18 stories, 1 large block square) is planned for Broadway at Sherman.  Northern Manhattan is Not for Sale and other local groups are gathering on Saturday at 1 pm at Broadway and Sherman for a rally and march that will go up Broadway, past RING, east on Dyckman, north on 10th. Event Info.
