Freddie Roach: Floyd Mayweather advised me to train Conor McGregor because super fight is going to happen

Gasoline, meet fire.

The much-talked about boxing match between pound-for-pound great Floyd Mayweather and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight champion, Conor McGregor, is still gaining momentum.

And legendary boxing trainer, Freddie Roach, may find himself in the middle of it, as he revealed on a recent edition of The MMA Hour that Floyd actually visited him at his Wild Card gym in Los Angles, Calif., to tell him that if "Notorious" gives him a call to seek his services, it would be in his best interest to take the job because it is going to happen.

And they will all get fatter pockets after the fact.

"Floyd actually came to my gym and told me, Freddie, I hear Conor talked to you.’ And I told him that he never has. He said, ‘If he reaches out and wants you to train him, I would take that job because I am going to fight him and we can all make a lot of money,’" said Freddie.

Still, Roach admits that there was a time when he doubted the showdown would ever go down. But now that UFC is in a new era, all signs are pointing to the historic bout actually seeing the light of day.

"So, according to Mayweather, yes, he said he was going to fight him and everything is pointing in that direction. At one point I didn’t think it was possible. I tried to make a fight one time when I was training Andrei Arlovski, and I tried to put him in with one of the Klitschkos," said Roach.

"I thought I had a good idea. I went into Ari’s office, and I hadn’t seen Ari in 10 years. At that time they said it would never happen. But, we’re in a different era now and it looks like it is going to happen. Everything's pointing in the right direction. He will have his hands full with a boxer like Floyd, but he’s sell-able and making noise. For a while I wanted him to be Georges first fight."

As far as what he thinks Conor's chances are against Mayweather, Roach didn't bite his tongue, saying that it will be very difficult for "Notorious" to deal with a lifelong pugilist like Floyd. But, at the end of the day, he won't count out the hard-hitting Irishman.

"Well, he is a pretty good striker. The thing is, Floyd is a great boxer. He is good at hitting and not getting hit. It would take a long time for Conor to get ready for a pure boxing match, But, one punch can change anything, so I am not going to count him out completely. Mayweather is the favorite, yes, but I will never count anyone out. He (McGregor) throws, he throws hard and he’s not afraid to throw," said Roach. "I like that about him. He’s sell-able, and he makes me laugh. But, when that bell rings he better be ready because he is fighting one of the best boxers of his era."

That said, if Conor and Co. did approach Freddie for assistance, the Hall of Fame trainer says it would be an honor for him to help him get prepared for the biggest combat sports fight of his life.

But it all depends on the timing, as Roach admitted Georges St-Pierre -- who recently re-upped with UFC -- is his first concern, as he is currently training the ex-welterweight king for his comeback fight.

One that Roach says he will be in "Rush’s" corner for come fight night.
