Apple Tree Writing Workshop with Camilla Nelson

Saturday, July 1, 2017 from 1:30 PM - 4:30 PM

This workshop offers a chance to explore the interface between human and other-than human writing techniques with the apple trees of the Richard Jefferies Museum orchard. Participants are introduced to the trees and orchard environment through a range of movement and multi-sensory exercises. These exercises are designed to give rise to a site-specific vocabulary to be imprinted into the skin of each apple on site - word by word, apple by apple. The aim is to create an orchard of apple tree poetry that participants and other visitors can enjoy as the apples grow and change over the coming months, ready for harvesting as part of the Poetry Swindon Festival in October 2017.

Camilla Nelson is a language artist, researcher and collaborator across a range of disciplines. She has a PhD in Reading and Writing with a Tree: Practising ‘Nature Writing’ as Enquiry from Falmouth University. Her current work includes Reading Movement, a language performance long-listed for The Leslie Scalapino Award and Apples & Other Languages, a page-based collection long-listed for the Melita Hume Poetry Prize published by Knives Forks and Spoons. Camilla curated The South West Poetry Tour with Steven Fowler in August 2016. She is founding editor of Singing Apple Press.
