Family gives up ownership of exotic monkey

SAN ANTONIO – The quarantine of a monkey that bit a San Antonio bank employee came to an end Wednesday.

Because owning exotic animals in San Antonio is illegal, the owners agreed to give up the monkey in order to avoid being charged a fee.

Animal Care Services said this is more about the safety of the public.

"Owning exotic animals is one of the biggest gambles you can actually do, they are a time bomb waiting to go off," said Lisa Norwood, ACS. "As we saw with this monkey issue."

Norwood said ACS heard of other incidents with this same monkey but haven't been able to confirm them.

The monkey will now live at a primate sanctuary near San Antonio.
