12 Beloved Quotes from Children's Books

Posted by Hayley on June 8, 2016
As part of Summer Reading for Kids on Goodreads, we asked on Facebook and Twitter: What's your favorite quote from a children's book? Your top answers are below!

"People laugh at me because I use big words. But if you have big ideas, you have to use big words to express them, haven't you?"
From Anne of Green Gables
by L.M. Montgomery

"I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as I'm living my baby you'll be."
From Love You Forever
by Robert Munsch

"It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye."
From The Little Prince
by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

"It doesn't happen all at once.... You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in your joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand."
From The Velveteen Rabbit
by Margery Williams

"You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think."
From Winnie-the-Pooh
by A.A. Milne

"I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship."
From Little Women
by Louisa May Alcott

"You're mad, bonkers, completely off your head. But I'll tell you a secret. All the best people are."
From Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
by Lewis Carroll

"Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?"
From Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
by J.K. Rowling

"If you become a bird and fly away from me, I will be a tree that you come home to."
From The Runaway Bunny
by Margaret Wise Brown

"Never do anything by halves if you want to get away with it. Be outrageous. Go the whole hog."
From Matilda
by Roald Dahl

And when things start to happen, don't worry, don't stew.
Just go right along, you'll start happening too!

From Oh, the Places You'll Go!
by Dr. Seuss

"One day, you will be old enough to start reading fairytales again."
From The Chronicles of Narnia
by C.S. Lewis

Josiah Of these quotes, my favorite is the A.A. Milne one. But there are several here, and a great deal more, to love and remember always.

Hayley I don't think I have a favourite children's book quote (I've read way too many to choose!), but I love the Harry Potter one listed!

message 5: by Jeff (last edited Jun 08, 2016 03:42PM) (new)

Jeff Walden That Anne of Green Gables quote is, IMO, not a very good one -- and it's one many an English teacher will have to work hard to undo.

The best expressions of thought are as simple as possible, using the smallest and clearest words. That doesn't exclude long or complicated words -- but they should be limited to those narrow contexts where they are precisely the intended meaning, and no shorter phrasing will do. As George Orwell put it, "Never use a long word where a short one will do." The book quote suggests that big ideas require big words, which is emphatically not the case -- and indeed big ideas very often are big because they do not use big words.

I disagree. Having a good vocabulary is a lifelong skill and being able to have mastery and full command of the English language is a talent many today are severely lacking.

Yes, I believe so. Those lines are first spoken between a mother and a baby, if memory serves. And then we get to follow this baby as he grows up. and those lines come back time and time again from his mother... until she's old, and have to be cared for by her now adult son. That's when those lines come again, this time from the son to the mother. And then, one final time, as the son, now a father, speaks to his own little baby.
...damn, I'm almost crying as I think about it. :P

message 34: by Emma (new)

Emma Unless I'm mistaken, the quote attributed to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass is actually from the movie Disney did a few years ago. There are plenty of good quotes in the books, that's just not one of them.

― Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden

“There are such a lot of things that have no place in summer and autumn and spring. Everything that’s a little shy and a little rum. Some kinds of night animals and people that don’t fit in with others and that nobody really believes in. They keep out of the way all the year. And then when everything’s quiet and white and the nights are long and most people are asleep—then they appear.”
― Tove Jansson, Moominland Midwinter

I fell in love with him. But I don't just stay with him by default as if there's no once else available to me. I stay with him because I choose to, every day that I wake up, every day that we fight or lie to each other or disappoint each other. I choose him over and over again, and he chooses me."
