Hello Art Lovers!

We're excited to announce the line-up for the first edition of Wikiendi Live! for 2017, taking place 25 February from 7pm-late.

The artists are...

Makadem is a talented musician and vibrant performing artist whose performances mix African traditional instruments like Nyatiti, Orutu, Ohangla, and Kalimba with electric bass, guitar and keys. He has opened for Sean Kuti, and played the Cannes Film Festival, Sauti za Busara, and other festivals around the world.

BBRAVE is a French-born, Ghana-based DJ and the founder/manager of the acclaimed AKWAABA music label. Selecting beats from Accra to Luanda to Kinshasa to Lagos, BBRAVE serves up Afrobeats plus Afrohouse, making for a tasty pan-African stew.

Jhikoman is a well-known Tanzania reggae singer from Bagamoyo. He sings in Swahili, English, and Nyaksaksi, giving voice to important messages that fight against oppression and injustice. Jhikoman has produced several albums and performed widely in Tanzania and Europe, at Mela Festival, World Village Festival, ZIFF, Busara, and many others. He has also taught singing at TaSUBa.

We hope you will join us at Nafasi Art Space on 25 February for a night full of amazing African music.

RECAP

Thanks to the big crowd that came out last Thursday for "Lamentations @ 12", a stage play written by Gertrude Munhamo that casts a harsh light on some of the darkest moments in Zimbabwe's liberation history, through the perspective of young girls who witnessed and survived brutality and loss. Filled with song, dance, emotion, and humour, the play was a searing portrait of humanity in the face of violence and struggle.

We also greatly enjoyed the workshop led by the Zimbabwean theatre professionals. More than 20 Tanzanian actors and dancers participated in the workshop, learning Zimbabwean dances and teaching Tanzanian ones. The workshop resulted in a 10-minute one act play that was written and performed by all of the participants. Hongerini wote!
