Culture@Converse: Upcoming Events
Nov. 16-19, 8:00 PM; Nov. 20, 2:00 PM
Theatre Converse will reimagine Chikamatsu Monzaemon's masterpiece of Japanese theatre
in the scintillating style of American film noir. Our production blends traditional bunraku puppetry and bold physical movement to create a shadowy world of secret courtesans and swarthy detectives. This rich tragedy finds new poetic resonance in the hands of our talented artists
Nov. 17, 6:30 PM
In the early 1960s, American employment ads were divided into two categories: jobs for men and jobs for women. Women could not hold credit cards in their own names. Graduate and professional schools routinely denied admission to qualified women on the grounds that they would be "taking a seat from a man." In many states, women were not called to serve on juries.
A Festival of Lessons and Carols
Thu. Dec. 1, 2016 | 8:00 pm
The Festival of Lessons and Carols originated in 1880 with Archbishop Benson when he was the Bishop of Truro for use in that Cathedral. In 1918, it was simplified and modified to use in King's College Chapel, Cambridge, by its Dean, The Very Reverend Eric Milner-White, to whom we also owe the Bidding Prayer. The Christmas service has been a tradition at Converse for the past 113 years. It is a service of worship involving all segments of the Converse community.
We welcome all who join us on this occasion.
Fri. Dec. 2, 2016 | 8:00 pm
The word VISCERAL refers to the instinctive, intuitive, gut, deep-seated, and deep-rooted feelings that drive us all. How do you listen to these visceral impulses, let alone act on them? Dance Converse's Fall Concert boldly explores how these fragments of instinctive feelings emerge to not only map our daily lives and choices, but also our future visions. Guest Artist/Choreographer Tyler Gilstrap's "Turbulent Wake", Naina Dewan's "Dreams of Flying",
and other dance works dive into the visceral realm, painting an evening of evocative contemporary dance.

Chamber Singers to Present Christmas Concert at Chapman
First Presbyterian Church Spartanburg's Chamber Singers will present their annual Christmas Concert --
Tidings of Comfort and Joy
-- in Chapman Cultural Center's theater Sunday, Dec. 4, 2016, starting at 7 p.m.
The 30-member choir will sing 13 holiday songs, many without accompaniment and all without any electronic amplification. Because of the 500-seat theater's unique and excellent acoustics, there is no need for amplification. As a result, many of the songs will be heard as they were originally written to be performed in small and intimate concert halls.
Tickets to the Chapman concert are available through the Church and through Mobile Meals, which will be the recipient of concert's proceeds. Tickets are $15 each and can be purchased by calling 864-583-4531
