Drama as fire engine crashes through door at Walsall station

When a 999 call comes to summon help to the scene of a crash, it's usually firefighters who are among the first at the scene.

But this crew were faced with their own drama after their engine smashed into an entrance of Walsall Fire Station.

Passers by were left stunned by the crash as they posted images on social media of the smash.

The door at the entrance to one of the bays at the station, off Blue Lane West, was ripped off and left crumpled after the engine hit it.

Firefighters climbed onto the top of the engine to assess the damage to the truck and door in the aftermath of the accident, which happened this morning.

West Midlands Fire Authority chairman, Councillor John Edwards, said the crash was unusual but accidents did happen from time to time.

He confirmed there will be an internal assessment of the circumstances of the crash to learn lessons.

The fire engine was returning from a job at around 8.40am and had been driven through the back entrance of the station.

But instead of coming to a halt in the station, it kept going and hit the front roller shutter entrance door from inside.

"It is called an accidental contact officially. We all have bumps in our car. These people are firefighters. They're not gods.

"There were no delays to any incidents. Thankfully there were no injuries."

West Midlands Fire Service spokesman Neil Spencer confirmed the crew had not been about to go out on another call when the accident happened.

"Our estates team will be assessing the damage and arranging repairs," he said.

"Temporary security measures will be in place until then."

The station remained open as normal.
