Newton's 31 Not Enough as Hatters Fall to Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—Jacksonville made 18 three-pointers, including 14 in the first half, as the Dolphins downed Stetson, 103-92, in Atlantic Sun Conference play Wednesday at Swisher Gym.

Stetson's Derick Newton led all scorers with 31 points, going 8 of 16 from the field and 13 of 14 from the free throw line. But JU's long-range barrage and a 17-point halftime deficit were too much for the Hatters (8-14 overall, 1-5 ASUN) to overcome.

The Dolphins (14-9, 2-4) led by as many as 26 points in the first half and by 17 (59-42) at halftime but the Hatters, behind the play of Newton, eventually got back in the game.

Jacksonville led 67-47 with less than 15 minutes to play. Newton scored 14 points as Stetson outscored Jacksonville, 34-19, over the next 10 minutes. A three-point play by Divine Myles made it 86-81 with 5:11 to go.

JU, however, scored the next six points to push its lead to 92-81 with 2:51 to play, and Stetson never got closer than nine the rest of the way.

Myles finished with 16 points for Stetson, while Luke Doyle added 14 and Leo Goodman 10 off the bench.

Tanner Rubio, who entered the game averaging 9.1 points, finished with 31 to lead the Dolphins.

News & Notes
One game after scoring 30 points against USC Upstate, Newton had the fourth 30-point game of his career with 31 vs. JU … he has three such efforts this season and the sophomore is now 63 points shy of reaching 1,000 career points … after scoring just 23 points in his last 4 games, Luke Doyle had 14 on 4 of 7 shooting from long range ... Stetson reached double figures in three-pointers (10) for the eighth time this season.

Quotable
"It's hard to spot a team a 26-point lead and have to battle back. We eventually got it down to five and we didn't close the game out. You have to be a tough team to close a game out on the road and we weren't tough. I'm OK with what we're doing offensively, but the defense right now is what I'm upset about. Defense is about toughness and we aren't showing a lot of toughness right now." – Stetson head coach Corey Williams
