Percy's Medical Fund

Hello everyone! Thank you so much clicking on Percy's Go Fund Me and for taking the time to read about why I am raising money for his medical bills.

My name is Eve Polich. About six years ago, my partner at the time, Lyle, and I, adopted Percy- he was six years old.  We rescued him from a family that loved him but for a variety of reasons wasn't able to continue caring for him. Lyle and I were his fourth owners, as Percy had been given up for adoption several times. Percy was my first dog ever, and he quickly became part of our little family and my best friend.

Percy is now twelve, and as often afflicts an older gentleman, he is suffering from some mild arthritis. Over the course of a month, I slowly watched his little limp, which I attributed to arthritis, turn into a big limp that required a vet visit. We went into to see Dr. Claire at Pet Care Center, and after she did some xrays, we could see that Percy had a large tumor in his right leg.

The tumor had eaten through bothof the bones in his right front leg. Dr. Claire informed me that the tumor was most likely a very aggressive form of bone cancer called osteosarcoma. Osteosarcoma in dogs is usually fatal, as the cancer often moves quickly into the bloodstream and the lungs. The vet said most likely Percy would only have a few months to live. There was only a twenty percent chance the tumor was benign.

We decided ampuation was the best route, because even as we waited for the biopsy results, Percy was in great danger of his leg breaking at the tumor site. Dr. Claire consulted with her fellow doctors and with a surgeon at another hospital, and they concluded that there was no way to save his leg.

Percy had his leg amputated on Tuesday August 16th and we recieved the biopsy results on the Wednesday after. The biopsy was inconclusive, but through blood tests, liver tests, and xrays, it was clear that the cancer had not spread and that future tumors are unlikely. There is still a chance that the cancer could manifest itself in his body again, but against all odds and for all intensive purposes he is in the clear and will hopefully live for a few more happy, healthy, active years.

As a student and a young person without signifigant income or savings, Percy's medical bills have been a source of stress. Major operations like amputation along with all the blood work, xrays, and overnight care and monitoring have added up. I am reaching out to friends and family for financial support to cover the medical bills. If you are able to make a donation, however large or small, Percy and I would be so grateful. I know not everyone is able to donate, but just sharing this page to help spread the word would be a great help!

The majority of the money donated to this Go Fund Me account will be used for bills already incurred that cover the xrays, blood work, liver tests, examinations, anesthesia, pain medication, antiinflammitory medication, the amputation procedure itself, and follow up overnight care and monitoring along with medical supplies. A smaller portion of the money donated will be used for future expenses: pain medication, the sling I will use to bear some of his weight when I walk him, two follow up appointments and blood work, two accupuncture appointments, and an appointment with a holistic vet to make decisions about Percy's diet and supplements going forward to give him the best chance of staying cancer-free.

Percy and I have had an amazing amount of support from friends and family over the last week. I can't even describe what all the kind words and actions have meant to us. We are so incredibly lucky to have such giving, loving, and compassionate humans surrounding us.

I spent a week in hell, thinking that for sure I only had a few months left with my best friend. Now the prognosis is a year or two...maybe more! I am in happy shock. Even though there is always the chance Percy could get another tumor, we are moving forward with hope, positivity, energy, and light.

Thank you so much for your donations, your time, and your support. It means the world.

Love,
Percy & Eve
