I make this drawing in response to an article I read this morning, ‘I Used to Be a Human Being’ by Andrew Sullivan.
In drawing this I wasn’t totally sure whether I was depicting the disorienting and bewildering digital landscape, or whether this was an image of a pilgrim who has discarded their smartphone and ventured out into the world of pain and presence. I think both are bewildernesses in their own ways.

On Monday I saw Wandjina painting. There has been a lot of controversy over Wandjina paintings. When I found one in Brunswick I had mixed feelings about it. It is good to have a reminder that we are on Aboriginal land, but Wandjinas aren’t local to this area. Wandjina are sacred to the Mowanjum people from the Kimberly. When Settler people have portrayed them in Perth and the Blue Mountains it has caused a lot of grief for the Mowanjum people. I guess this artwork could also be a reminder of the distruption and displacement of Aboriginal societies. I hope that whoever has painted this one is encouraged to find out more about the Wandjina and about why it should be treated with reverence.
Tea is important in a lot of the cultures that make up our society in this land. Next week I’m hosting a learning circle that will involve tea. I’m wondering, what meaning does tea hold for you?
