Executive Power Note

Message from GLMPI Executive Director, La'Keisha Gray-Sewell

Wow! It seems as if time goes by so fast. GLMPI recently had a "birthday," celebrating our 3rd year as an organization. And to think, our anniversary came about just as we find ourselves expanding, getting to know more girls like me at our newest school site and helping them to know themselves better while collectively reading the awesome "The Skin I'm In," by Sharon G. Flake. Reading this book together with girls, witnessing their transformation, and seeing the impact my mentoring had on girls was the impetus for starting GLMPI. Realizing how much necessary this work of advocating and empowering girls has been humbling and glorious. The icing on our figurative birthday cake was the Twitter shout out we received from the author herself. Check it out below. I wouldn't trade my job for the world!

Our anniversary is not the only thing we are celebrating at GLMPI. We are still on the moon about our successful 3rd Annual Pampered Power Talk that we hosted for Women's History Month in March. The girls connected their wellness to various career options in STEM.

Although we're almost half way through 2015, major things remain on our horizon. Earlier this year GLMPI was selected to be a part of the illustrious Goodcity Chicago's incubator program. Through this leadership and organizational development program, we know our mission will be manifest. In turn, our impact and relevancy amongst girls will increase tenfold so that they will be our best illustration of Girls Like Me transforming our city, making a difference in the world!

Be sure you are connected to our social media networks and subscribe to this newsletter to keep up with our FREE events, programs and resources.

After being pampered with facials, hand massages and manicures at the 3rd Annual Pampered Power Talks, girls heard from panelists about STEM career options. Then they had a little hands on engineering and built a car, and they were treated to a healthy food demonstration by chef Emon Fowler. Girls were introduced to cool games, programs and camps they could enter now to prepare them for a future in STEM, as well as fields to study in college. Special thanks to Theresa Robinson and Kristen Hughes who served as our professional STEM panelists. Also celebrity hairstylist, Tish Virtuous Ellis along with the fab ladies of All I Need Is One Mic (AINIOM), Nicky Horne and Chiquita Carey, gave the girls an inside peek into the glam world of STEM careers in fashion, design, cosmetology, esthetician and journalism, too! Topping off the day, attendees were shocked and ecstatic when they got a surprise visit from Ta'Rhonda Jones, a Chicago girl like me who also just happens to be a stand out celebrity starring on television's popular show, Empire. She was so gracious to stop by and give some words of inspiration and take a picture with every girl. It was a fabulous time had by all.

The icing on the cake was that three GLMPI girls won a makeover and fashion debut in the Princess and Spice Fashion Show sponsored by Simone Kristen of Princess and Spice. Our girls received the royal treatment at the annual fashion show. For this GLMPI is extremely grateful for the that partnership!

Girls used all their senses! The nose test to smell which luscious scent Soul Purpose scrub and lotion they wanted for their hand massage. It was an unanimous vote, the hand massages were heavenly!

Check out Voices of Advocacy Radio!
So many of our girls are anxious to explore their options beyond high school. It's never too early to guide them toward a blue print for success! Still, some may need some last minute support to not only map out their goals, but help secure financial assistance as well. Listen to Voices of Advocacy Radio guest; Keana Jones, the student success coach and CEO of KRJ Resources, as she offers great tips and resources to help teens soar towards their dreams.
Another Chicago girl like me, our superb First Lady of the United States, Mrs. Michelle Obama, delivered a powerful message to the graduates of Tuskegee University. While the message was for college grads on that day, it is one that all can take to heart. Please be sure to watch in its entirety, share with your girls in your class/program or on your social networks. The video is below.
