Welcome Letter From Superintendent, Kevin Polston Greetings, Godfrey-Lee community! I am honored and grateful for the opportunity to serve Godfrey-Lee Public Schools as Superintendent. The district has been well-served under the leadership of David Britten, and I know I have big shoes to fill. I will give everything I have to serve the students, staff, and families as we strive for excellence in all we do. In this manner, I will be true to who I am and lead with the vision that we can accomplish more as a collaborative team than any one individual can do on their own. I have served for the past 15 years as a teacher, coach, curriculum specialist, and principal at Grand Haven Area Public Schools. My family and I also live in Grand Haven. This summer marks my 14th wedding anniversary to my wife and best friend, Amy Polston. We have two children, Sofia age 9, and Max age 6. Amy is a first grade teacher at Rosy Mound Elementary School in Grand Haven, and that is also where my children attend school. We enjoy activities outside, enjoying nature, reading together, and traveling to explore new places. I deeply believe that all students can be successful. Whether in the classroom, community, athletic fields, or performance stage, creating opportunities for young people to achieve above and beyond is vital. Our mission statement calls

for us to “Prepare each student for college and career in a 21st century global community.” Essential to this mission is cultivating strong relationships among students, staff, families, and the community. Our schools must serve each individual, but we know schools cannot do it alone. Rather, the collective support from all stakeholders will make our mission a reality. I will embody this spirit to grow the possibilities for all members of the Godfrey-Lee Public Schools family. The start of school is just around the corner. Our staff has been working all summer in preparation to make the 2017-18 school year a successful one for all students! Please note the Orientation and Open House schedules during the week of August 14. It is critical to attend these events, to make sure our students are prepared to hit the ground running on August 21, our first day of school. The partnership between school and family is essential to student success. Our parents are always welcome in our schools, and I encourage you to get to know your child’s teachers and engage in their learning. We are here to serve our students, families, and community, and please let us know how we might assist in your child’s learning. I look forward to meeting you in our schools or out in the community. Godfrey-Lee has a long and rich history of providing excellent education programming for the community. Bus Registration The Godfrey-Lee School District provides limited busing for Kindergarten through 5th Grade students, with younger age students given first preference. Registration for busing will need to be completed annually. Registration forms for busing can be completed either at the Administration Office or elementary school offices. Contact Scott Bergman, Operations Director, with any questions (616) 241-1140.

Immunizations

Help protect your child from disease by keeping their immunizations up to date. Although children receive most of their immunizations as infants, additional vaccinations are required for children entering Kindergarten, and again at ages 11-12. Contact your healthcare provider or the Kent County Health Department (616) 632-7200, to schedule an appointment

2017-18 New Student Registration Registration for new students, who have not been attending Godfrey-Lee Public Schools, is held at the Administration Office (1324 Burton St., S.W., Wyoming 49509) throughout the Summer, 8am-3:30pm, Monday-Thursday. The Administration Office will be closed on Fridays. Please bring the following required documents: • Certified and Original Birth Certificate • Immunization Record • Two Proofs of Residency (examples: current utility bill, driver’s license, lease agreement or mortgage statement) • Vision Screening** and Current Physical for Kindergarten and Preschool Students • Current transcript from previous school, if entering 10-12 Grades Vision screening is required for students entering Kindergarten or 1st Grade for the first time in the State of Michigan (Public Health Code Act 368 of 1978, Section 9307). Please present documentation of completed vision screening at time of registration or by the first day of school. If your child did not have his/her vision screening during their recent physical, The Kent County Health Department (616) 632-7047 offers screening by appointment only, at no cost to children and families. Students must be 4 years of age, on or before December 1, 2016, to enroll in Preschool. Students must be 5 years of age, on or before September 1, 2016, to enroll in Kindergarten.

Emergency Messenger Sends Phone, Text or Emails to Parents within Minutes

Just ask Superintendents if snow days and other emergency situations occur too often and most, if not all, of them would quickly answer yes. During these situations, it’s challenging to get the word out to our parents and families in a timely manner. To help communicate emergency information or important reminders, Godfrey-Lee’s emergency messenger system allows parents to receive a phone call, text or email, within minutes. Families do not need to register or sign up to begin receiving emergency messages, but parents can login to the Infinite Campus Parent Portal to select different contact settings. If you do not have a login yet and wish to change your settings or contact information, please follow this simple process: 1. Visit to www.godfrey-lee.org 2. Under the Parent Tab, Select Infinite Campus Parent Portal 3. Click the blue link at the bottom of the screen to begin the registration process

Sports Physicals Fall Sports Practices Start Dates: Every Lee Middle and High School Athlete is required to have a current physical on file with the Athletic Department in order to participate in any sports practice or competition. Physicals dated after April 15, 2017, are good for all sports during the 2017-18 school year. If you’re unable to get into your regular doctor’s office, MedExpress Urgent Care in Wyoming on 740 28th Street, (616) 530-3946, offers sports physicals for $30 to any Lee Middle and High School student. Fall Sports practices begin August 8, for Football, and August 10, for other Fall sports. Middle School Sports practices begin August 22. Colorguard Camp: Students attended our four-day Colorguard camp to learn the basic skills of flag performance and choreography. They worked fearlessly and were very energetic! The first day was concentrated on warm ups, basic flag skills, plus learning the skills needed to march as a Colorguard member. Students also learned a flag routine to part of the song "El Cumbanchero” which was recorded on video, and each student will receive a copy.

Campamento Colorguard:

Nuestro campamento Colorguard de cuatro-días para aprender las habilidades básicas de representación de la bandera y coreografía. Los estudiantes trabajaron intrépidamente y fueron muy enérgicos! Heather Groendyke has competed in 8 seasons of athletics in her time here at Lee, 4 seasons of both volleyball and softball, earning 6 varsity letters throughout her career. In her senior seasons, she served as team captain on both teams. Heather is an all conference softball player and one of the best infielders to come through Lee in recent years. In the classroom, Heather boasts an impressive 3.95 GPA and is a member of the Lee High School chapter of the National Honor Society. Heather Groendyke ha competido en 8 temporadas de deportes en su tiempo aquí en Lee, 4 temporadas tanto de voleibol y softbol, ganando 6 letras universidad a lo largo de su carrera. Ramses has competed in 7 seasons of athletics in his time here at Lee. In each of those seasons, Ramses has earned a varsity letter, 4 in football, 2 in track, and 1 in basketball. Ramses has proven to be a strong leader and outstanding role model. He has been selected as a team captain for 6 of the 7 teams he has competed on. In the classroom, Ramses has maintained 3.85 GPA. Desirae Fenton

Desirae Fenton has competed in 8 seasons of athletics in her time here at Lee, lettering in both volleyball and softball for 3 seasons each. Heather is an all-conference softball catcher and had a very productive senior season as a setter on the volleyball team. Desirae is a model student and fierce competitior on the field of play. Thomas Robinson

Thomas competes in Track & Field & Football here at Lee High School. He has earned 4 varsity letters in his career thus far. As a sophomore last year, Thomas began to rewrite Lee's record book in Track & Field. He took home state championships in both the 100M Dash and 200M Dash and was on the state qualifying 4X100M Relay team. This year, Thomas has improved all of his times and is the 2nd ranked athlete in the state across all divisions in both the 100M Dash & 200M Dash. Not only does Thomas work hard in competition but in the classroom as well; he holds a 3.5 GPA and shows a tremendous amount of respect for his teachers and classmates. Thomas compite en Pista & Campo & Fútbol aquí en la Preparatoria Lee. Él ha ganado 4 letras universidad en su carrera hasta el momento. Como alumno de décimo grado, el año pasado Thomas comenzó a reescribir el libro de récords en Pista y Campo. Teachers Go To School In The Summer Too!

Many Godfrey-Lee teachers and administrators attend classes and professional development during the Summer. This year, teachers were involved in learning: • structures to engage students in learning • strategies to use to help English learners learn language and content • ways to help all students learn complex math principles and practices • how to make schools more equitable through rigorous content learning • ways to support students with special learning needs • how to use data to support principal leadership • why a multi-tiered system of support beneﬁts all students. Some of these opportunities were provided by Federal fund and under Title II grant; others were provided through grants from both the Jandernoa Foundation and the DeVos Foundation. We are grateful to these partners for their support of our district's teachers and administrators. Lee High School Students and Business Leaders Give Thanks to United States Military Members at Armed Forces Thanksgiving On a brisk spring morning, students from more than 50 schools across West Michigan, including Josiah Spencer and Isac Valdez from Lee High School, gathered together to pay tribute to the brave men and women of the United States military, past and present, during the second annual Armed Forces Thanksgiving that takes place each May. Our own Colonel David Britten attended along with them. Students joined local business leaders for a traditional Thanksgiving meal in downtown Grand Rapids that featured more than 150 military members. The event, which attracted more than 700 people from all walks of life, was developed to strengthen awareness and dialogue surrounding the contributions our military personnel have made and continue to make on behalf of their families, their friends, and their country. Proceeds from the event are donated to the West Michigan Veterans Coalition. During the luncheon, special guest, Sergeant and author, Noah Galloway, provided an inspirational message that won’t soon be forgotten. Having enlisted after the 9/11 attacks on the United States, Galloway was gravely injured during his second tour of duty in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attack in 2005, losing his left arm above the elbow and left leg below the knee. His book, Living with No Excuses, details how he lost more than limbs, but never gave up. It is a story of success and failure, courage and weakness, tears and triumphs. This one-of-a-kind event also featured a student rally at Ah-Nab-Awen Park and Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, where students were given an opportunity to speak with veterans and active military members, while seeing military vehicles and combat gear up-close. As part of the activity, students that attended the event, primarily juniors, are encouraged to put together a military celebration event of their own at school next year. East Lee Campus 2017-18 Orientation East Lee Campus will hold orientation on August 14 and 15, from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Returning students may come into the school to update any changes to their status, such as phone number or address changes. Schedules will not be available until the first day of school. Students new to East Lee will need to go to the Administration building, 1324 Burton St., SW to start the enrollment process. New students will need a certified copy of their birth certificate, a copy of immunization records, two proofs of residency (driver’s license, utility bill, rent receipt), and a copy of the student’s transcript.

Movie-Making Camp Several students took part in a four-day Movie Production Camp. The goal was to produce a 10-minute short film that can be submitted to Teen Film festivals. The students did everything from lighting, directing, sound, filming, writing, and acting. The final product is a short film called "Ghost Ferreters," which is about a group of ghost hunters who go to research a report of strange activity in a local school. Student Privacy And Parental Access To Information

The Board of Education respects the privacy rights of parents and their children. No student shall be required, as a part of the school program or the District’s curriculum, without prior written consent of the student (if an adult or an emancipated minor) or, if an unemancipated minor, his/her parents, to submit to or participate in any survey, analysis, or evaluation that reveals information concerning: political affiliations or beliefs of the student or his/her parents; • mental or psychological problems of the student or his/her family; • sex behavior or attitudes; • illegal, antisocial, self-incriminating or demeaning behavior; • critical appraisals of other individuals with whom respondents have close, family relationships; • legally-recognized privileged and analogous relationships, such as those of lawyers, physicians, and ministers; • religious practices, affiliations or beliefs of the student or his/her parents; or • income (other than that required by law to determine eligibility for participation in a program or for receiving ﬁnancial assistance under such a program). The Superintendent shall ensure that procedures are established whereby parents may inspect any materials used in conjunction with any such survey, analysis, or evaluation. Further, parents have the right to inspect, upon request, a survey or evaluation created by a third party before the survey/evaluation is administered or distributed by the school to the student. The parent will have access to the survey/evaluation within a reasonable period of time after the request is received by the building principal. Additionally, parents have the right to inspect, upon request, any instructional material used as part of the educational curriculum of the student. May 15, 2017 Godfrey-Lee Public Schools conducted an extensive asbestos survey of all our buildings in 1989. Based on the findings of this inspection, a comprehensive management plan was drafted. This plan details the response actions that the district would be taking regarding asbestos containing material found in our buildings.

This notification was sent to all district residents, parents, teachers, and employees as required by law. The AHERA management plan is located in each of the buildings in the main offices as well as in the Facilities Office at the ECC. This plan is available for inspection at our administration office, without cost or restriction, during normal business hours, from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday. If you wish to have a personal copy, please notify the main administrative office and it will be supplied to you within five working days at a cost of 30 cents per page.

During the past year, there were no asbestos removal projects in the District. I completed Designated Person Training on July 6, 2000, and became the designated person for the District on August 14, 2000. The six-month periodic inspections were completed on December 21, 2016 and May 15, 2017. The areas of ACM at Lee and Godfrey were inspected and were determined to be non-friable. The three-year A.H.E.R.A. inspection was completed on August 5, 2015, and all areas were found to be in compliance with a full three year inspection due in August of 2018. The Early Childhood Center, East Lee Campus and the Administration Building have no known asbestos materials and have had no construction or remodeling activities in the last year.

Durante el año pasado no hubo proyectos de remoción de asbestos en el Distrito. Yo completé un Entrenamiento de Persona Designada el 6 de julio, 2000 y me convertí en la persona designada por el Distrito el 14 de agosto, 2000. Qualification of Staff

In compliance with law, the Godfrey-Lee Board of Education may require students to submit to periodic health examinations to: • protect the school community from the spread of communicable disease; • determine that each student's participation in health, safety, and physical education courses meets his/her individual needs; • determine that the learning potential of each child is not lessened by a remediable, physical disability. Godfrey-Lee Public Schools shall specify the need for services which may include, but not be limited to: • student physical examinations; • athlete physical examinations; • dental examinations; • tests for communicable disease; • vision screening; • audiometric screening; • scoliosis test.

Any health services program should also include instruction to staff members on the observance of students for conditions that indicate physical defect or disability.

Godfrey-Lee Public Schools, as an educational institution that receives funds under Title I Part A., hereby notifies all parents that you may request information regarding the professional qualifications of your child’s classroom teacher including: • whether the teacher has met State qualification and licensing criteria for the grade level(s) and subject areas in which the teacher provides instruction; • whether the teacher is teaching under emergency or other provisional status through which State qualification or licensing criteria have been waived; • the baccalaureate degree major of the teacher and any other graduate certification or degree held by the teacher, and the field of discipline of the certification or degree; • whether your child is provided services by Title I paraeducators and if so, their qualification.
